1. See Figures 9-3 and 9-4. Why are “the overwhelming majority of East Asia's inhabitants located in the eastern one-third of the realm's territory?” All you need to do here is to say in your own words what it is about the “B” and “H” zones that makes the central one-third and western one-third of the realm unable to support the enormous population that developed over thousands of years in the “C” and “D” zones of the eastern one-third of the realm. -1- North Korea: Taiwan (or, as it still officially calls itself, the “Republic or China” or “ROC”): - 4- 4. The first Asian country to experience a post-WWII “economic miracle” was This is hardly surprising since it began its modernization in the mid-19th Century, a full century before others in Asia. The four much smaller “Asian Tigers” who followed the same economic model in the 1960s and 1970s were: (which had been effectively separated from China by the 1925-49 civil war that was summarized in #3 above), (which was separated from its northern half because different parts of the peninsula were militarily occupied by foreign communist and non-communist forces at the end of World War II), (which was a British colony that was nearly self-governing at that time but is now an “autonomous region” of China), and (which is not on this location list because it will be covered in Chapter 10 on the Southeast Asian realm). In the late 1970s, deeply impoverished began to take the same path. It now has the largest economy in the world – that is, the greatest total value of the goods and services produced each year – although this is partly because of its enormous population. Go to Figure G-11 in the textbook’s introduction and see that it is classified by the World Bank as an upper-middle-income country (like Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey) because it remains poorer than Japan and the Asian Tigers on a per capita basis. 5. Starting with the information you already gathered in #3 and #4 above, summarize how each of the following countries figured in the Cold War. Specifically, say -- how its government was established, -- which superpower(s) supported it, the outcome of any major conflict, and -- major remaining problems that are a legacy of the Cold War South Korea: - 3 - 3 - 2. Briefly describe the geographic character of the four major river basins (i.e. important things that are found there and economic activities that occur there). Give particular attention to the two extraordinary concentrations of farmers that are labeled as B and C on Figure G-7 in the textbook’s introduction. Note: The paragraph before “The Great Rivers” heading refers you back to Figure G-7 but does not mention the B and C labels on that map. Go back to see the map and read the accompanying paragraph about the East Asian population cluster. Liao River Basin (lee-OW): Huange He River Basin (HWAHNG-huh): Chang Jiang / Yangzi River Basin (chang jee-AHNG /YANG-dzee): Xi Jiang / Pearl River Basin (shee jee-AHNG / PERL): 3. Not long after China became a Republic with the overthrow of the Emperor (1911), the country suffered a long civil war (1924-49) between the ruling N who were led by Chaing Kai-Shek, and the C who were led by The were the victors The losers (the ) were not vanquished but instead maintained their rule over the island province of which for all practical purposes became a separate country (and appears as such on your location list). NOTE: Both sides in the civil war continue to assert their official position that China remains one country and that the other side is an illegitimate regime.
