Many people wonder whether playing video games can be considered a real sport. Notably, even though e-gaming is as not physically demanding as the other sports, its structure, strong fan base, and the requirements have made the sport to look like a real sport. However, on the other hand, there is a lot of controversy surrounding it in the sense that a majority of people feel that the negative outweighs the positives of the sport. Some of the concerns include addiction, abuse, and risky behaviour. Therefore, this leads them to conclude that e- gaming is a waste of time. E-gaming is not a waste of time since it allows people to relax, enables them to become more productive, and, at the same time, can make some economic benefits. The opponents argue that the sport has quite a number of negative effects on minors in the sense that they do more harm than good to them. The most cited case is that the games promote violent behaviour among this particular population. In my opinion, the games are not to be blamed. However, the blame can be laid on those who play the game full time. Also, it is important to note that the society has classified games into two types, which are good and bad. The good entertainment according to society includes reading, exercising, and playing chess. On the other hand, bad entertainment is considered watching Television, surfing the internet, and playing video games. They argue that sports can sharpen reflexes and enhance Zhu 2 physical fitness while reading enhances your imagination and playing chess will keep one’s brain active and enriches one’s social life. This makes them believe that the skills gained from the game can only be used in that game and are not useful in other areas of life since it stops someone from socializing and studying and this is not beneficial at all. E-gaming is not a waste of time since it has its economic benefits. For instance, Turkey is hoping the e-gaming exports to reach $ 1 billion by the close of 2018 since the industry has been developing at a rapid pace in the past years. This has been attributed to the increased global interest in the games that have been developed by the country’s local producers. For Instance, Ankara has set a high record of 40% in terms of exports. This translated to $700 million in sales revenue, which was an improvement from 2016’s 25% exports and $500 million in sales revenue. Additionally, it is projected that the gaming sector in 2023 the exports will be valued at $ 10 billion dollars (Plus Company Updates, 2018). Another example includes the Taiwanese Company Themaltake technology sees a lot of opportunities in the internet cafes and the beginner-level and middle-level gamers since they have been getting stability to Filipino gamers (Business Mirror, 2016). The other major benefit is that it has created an opportunity for the developers to become more innovative and creative with their products. This has led to them being recognized in the annual e-gaming Awards. The most recent one being the EGR B2B awards that were held at the Hurlingham Club in London to celebrate excellence in e-gaming disciplines that included payments, software and Information Technology. Besides them bagging awards they have been able to create job opportunities. This further strengthens the argument that e-gaming is not a waste of time (Plus Companies Updates, 2017). In conclusion, one cannot ignore the argument brought forth by the opposing side. However, e-gaming would be a waste if the person engaging in it misuses it therefore, that is Zhu 3 why the manufacturers are reminded to have disclaimers such as the game can be addictive. This will be enough warning to the players. The readers have learnt from the topic that egaming have quite a number of benefits thanks to the recent articles that have been highlighted the economic benefits. Therefore, it is important for all of us to start viewing egaming as an opportunity to enhance creativity and innovation which subsequently leads to economic development.
