Description

I am asking 3-5 papers on searching 2 different material for 3 categories each explaining the material and comparing between them in regards of (density, strength, stiffness and durability) and the cost; and discuss why they are successful and why not?.

The three different categories:

1- Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs): two materials.

2- Metal matrix composites (MMCs) : two materials.

3- Polymer matrix composites (PMCs): two materials.

MEEN 431 Composite Materials Project: 3 (Due Date: 11/19/2018, Monday) Review and discussion on Composite Materials Composite material is combination of two or more constituents (materials) that are microscopically combined to produce a more useful material to meet performance and cost of a product. A number of polymeric composite materials have been developed over the years. They can be broadly classified as particle, discontinuous fiber and continuous fiber reinforced composites. Review in the web on polymer composite material products that are successfully developed and used in each of three composite categories. Take at least two (2) products as examples in each case, state the constituents, performance (density, strength, stiffness and durability) and the cost; and discuss why they are successful and why not? Discuss and provide your own opinion. If needed you can compare the performance with aluminum/steel. Note: This one of three projects and caries 10 points!

Composite Materials
1. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs)
Ceramic matrix composites, CMCs, are subgroups of the composite materials in addition
to the ceramics subgroup. Ceramic matrix composites consist of the ceramic fibers embedded
within the ceramic matrix. The matrix, as well as the threads, can comprise of any ceramic
product having the consideration to carbon, silicon alongside the carbon and silicon fibers.
Ceramic matrix composite consists of materials such as carbon-fiber-reinforced silicon carbide
and silicon carbide-reinforced-silicon carbide. The elements differs based on their elongation to
rapture up to one percent, strength in increased fracture toughness, extreme thermal shock
resistivity, increased dynamically alongside load capability as well as anisotropic properties
regarding the fibers’ orientation (Zok, 2016).

C/SiC
C/SiC refers to the ceramic matrix composite material which is carbon-fiber-reinforced
silicon carbide. The material has a density of 2.1grams per cubic centimeters. The C/SiC material
has a tensile strength of 310MPa and a flexural strength of 475MPa. The material has a stiffness
of 12% with its durability up to 0.75% (Zok, 2016). The material components result to its high
cost.
SiC/SiC
Silicon carbide-reinforced silicon carbide is a ceramic matrix composite material which
has a density of 3.1 grams per cubic centimeters, tensile a...
