INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY LEARY, FALL 2018 Happiness Paper (100 points) OVERVIEW: Introduction to Psychology as well as other courses that you may have taken can help you to think about life and to think critically about claims that others make. You are learning about many theories or perspectives over the course of the semester in Introduction to Psychology (and maybe in other courses as well). Apply what you have learned to the following issue. INSTRUCTIONS: Write a 4-page paper that demonstrates your ability to discuss the topic of happiness as a psychological concept with good critical analysis skills. We discuss important concepts throughout the course that will enable you to answer the questions. This paper is to be submitted on Blackboard. The main tasks are to be able to show understanding of different theoretical perspectives of understanding human behavior in psychology, and how to think scientifically regarding the phenomenon of happiness. Your paper requires you to read the article “The Happiness IncomeParadox Revisited” by Easterline and colleagues. Particularly, think about the quote below, and answer the questions below. QUOTE: “As a country’s income grows during the course of economic development, does human happiness advance – does economic growth improve the human lot?” This question was asked by Easterline (1975) as part of the challenge to the concept that economic progress was always accompanied by social progress, the earlier view usually labelled as Piquo’s dictum. Easterline and colleages (2016) returned to this question recently and concluded that Happiness is the most important measure of individual, and societal, well-being. Read the Easterline article, then think about the implications of this conclusion. As students completing a course in psychology and possibly other social science background, many of the topics you considered could be applied to considering this conclusion. For each of the following questions, draw on the content of this course, to suggest ways which you think point to how we could study this conclusion. 1 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY LEARY, FALL 2018 QUESTIONS: 1. How should we measure factors that relate to happiness as a concept? Define 5 quantitative measures (things characterized by numbers, usually the amount of something the individual is or has), and 5 qualitative measures (things that are usually not described in numbers but take into account the value or importance of what is described). 2. How would different theories explain why someone is happy? Thinking broadly about the individual, interpersonal, and societal factors that can influence a person, suggest some reasons they might, or might not, be happy. 3. Using the factors from the answer above, and considering the theories or perspectives you studied, offer at least two different explanations for how happiness might be developed, or maintained, or influence a person’s point of view given the findings about SWB among different countries in the article. 4. Given all of this, take a position, do you think happiness should be a useful predictor of a person’s well-being? If yes, why? If no, why not? The paper should be about 4 pages, double-spaced. No title page is needed. The paper consists of answering the above 4 questions. The paper should mention things included in the Easterline et al. (2016) article, as well as concepts from class. The grading rubric on the next page is a guideline to help you be sure you are meeting the criteria for an A paper. 2 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY LEARY, FALL 2018 GRADING RUBRIC: Criteria/Performance Rating Scoring points = Insufficient Evidence 0 Poor Good Excellent 1 2 3 Demonstrates an understanding of the issue/phenomena by gathering quantitative and qualitative data/evidence relevant to the issue/BIS phenomena. Introduction.
Happiness can be described as the point to which a person evaluates the all-round quality
of his/her life in a positive way or on the other hand how well a person likes their life. According
to (Velleman, 1991) happiness is subject to a wider category concerning evaluations of life.
Regarding the above definition, the effective way to measure happiness is to ask an individual to
give an account concerning his/her opinion regarding their own happiness situation.
Measuring factors that relate to happiness
The measure of the happiness of a particular individual while considering every possible
factor is the objective of estimation in outstanding cases (Easterline, 1995). It happens in
psychological exercise incidentally, yet such situations have their very own specific provisions
that are not achieved here. Sociologists, on the other hand, are regularly inspired by the
happiness of collectivities, e.g., regarding the citizens of a country, but they can't make progress
from beginning their analysis with measuring happiness on an individual level. In addition, they
are narrowly intrigued by happiness in that size, but only with happiness that relates to more than
one variable. Public discussions regarding happiness rarely identify the concept (Griffin, 1986).
However a growing number of psychologists and economists are involved with another study of
measuring well-being, an idea that integrates happiness yet widens beyond it.

Some of the quantitate measures for happiness may include:
1. Biological factors such as neurotransmitters levels that identify the degree of happiness.
However, there are no conclusive determinant factors to this method in determining the
level of happiness.
2. Behavioral factors which can also be used...
