REASON FOR REFERRAL:
The client has been referred to Substance Abuse Intake Assessment by the Adult Probation
Department. Sue is a 28 year old Haitian woman addicted to crack cocaine and recently pled guilty
to charges of the possession, sale of an illicit substance, and of engaging in prostitution.

IDENTIFYING INFORMATION:
Sue is a single mother of four children, having been abandoned by her irresponsible husband. Her
children are aged 2, 4, 5 and 8 years. She is a high school dropout. She has also been a victim of
domestic violence by her husband. She does not know where her husband is, but she believes that
he has returned to Haiti. Sue now maintains an ongoing lesbian relationship with her best friend,
who also works as a prostitute.

Sue grew up in the City of Port au Prince, Haiti, being the youngest of eight children. She lost one
older sister and one older brother to pneumonia when they were both less than five years of age.
Her father was an alcoholic and involved himself in petty crimes, while her mother suffered from
an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. She was raised Catholic by her maternal grandmother with whom
she lived for an extended period of time.
Sue and her estranged husband, together with their children, emigrated to their United States from
Haiti following the major earthquake that hit her homeland in 2010. On arriving in the US, they
all moved in with her aunt and uncle who were staying in Miami, Florida. Four months down the
line, her hosts asked them to find their own living arrangements because of the high costs of living.
This is how she ended up in a dingy hotel in downtown Miami with her four children.
There is no mention of her husband during this movement from her aunt’s place to the hotel.
However, she did not get a stable job to cater for her financial needs, including that of her children,
which lured her into doing drugs. At the hotel, a drug-dealing neighbor enticed her into selling
drugs in order to earn some extra income. Subsequently, she began using the drugs she sold,
becoming addicted to the crack cocaine, in addition to being indebted to her dealer. Facing
challenges from both drug abuse and addiction and financial challenges, she opted into prostitution
in order to support her addiction and pay the dealer.
