Introduction
The Empowering, Strengths-Based Approach is a system that first of all determines the
strengths of individuals and proceeds to help the client from there, just like the name suggests.
These strengths include qualities like skills, knowledge, capacity, and potential in the clients. The
focus given to the strengths of the individual does not necessarily translate to ignoring the
weaknesses or transforming them into strengths, (Hare, 2004). The strengths-based approach only
aims at using the already existing strengths to work towards a solution to current problems.
Why I selected the client’s system
The client’s system is a system that is used for a group of people with similar traits and can,
therefore, be grouped together and work as a team. The case I am studying is that of a girl with
academic problems. More details about the case will be discussed later. However, it is not a rare
occurrence. It does occur in young children. The clients depend on one another and their behaviors
are related, (Gitterman, & Germain, 2008). The clients also depend on a social worker to overcome
challenges. My case here is of a girl who had to be guided when doing her homework or any class
activity. The dependence is the clear reason why I chose to select a client’s system.
Description of the client system
Lisa, my client, is an 8.1-year-old girl who goes to Walk’s class at Bright Day school.
Physically, she is of average weight and height for a girl of her age. She does not have any physical
qualities that can raise concern. Her biological mother, Sandra Lopez, is said to have had a normal
pregnancy and there were no complications during the nine-months pregnancy. Sandra carried
Liza full-term, she was not born prematurely. Liza was delivered virginally and there were no
complications at all during the pregnancy. She was weighing 7lbs. Healthwise, the mother did not

expose Liza to any harmful conditions like smoking, drinking, or take any medication, whether
prescribed or non-prescribed, which allowed the fetus to grow healthily, (Hepworth, et al., 2016).
After birth, the baby contracted a bacterial infection and stayed for a month in the NICU.
After discharge, there were no further complications and the baby maintained normal habits
like feeding habits, sleeping habits, and weight gain, within all the parameters of a normal baby.
Liza began walking when she was 11 months, speaking between the ages of 12-21 months, and
was toilet trained with no challenges or strains coming up by the age of two and a half years. There
were no developmental problems with Liza during speech and she, therefore, did not need any
intervention services while still at Puerto Rico. Her developmental stages were not marked with
any challenges, she was a perfectly normal baby. Likewise, her medical history is clean. There are
no cases of hospitalization, accidents, seizures, injuries, or diseases.
Liza, however, has asthma and she takes medication to control it. The mother is confident
that the little girl is outgrowing asthma because she has not had attacks lately. This is a really good
sign of a healthy child. Liza’s hearing screening is normal but she wears corrective lenses for her
vision. Apart from this, there are no medical issues that the little girl faces. Emotionally, Liza is
doing great. Although as her mother explains, when Liza was six months old, she separated from
the man...
