Ethical Concerns Surrounding DNA Sequencing
DNA sequencing refers to the process utilized in ascertaining the precise order of the four
DNA nucleotide bases – adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine. The DNA bases offer the
underlying genetic origin which determines the genotype and phenotype of a cell. Even though
DNA nucleotides are not the only determinants of phenotypes, they are critical to their
formation. Notably, every person has a particular base sequence for DNA nucleotide. In addition,
every person’s DNA sequence contains the health about them as well as those of their families.
The advancement of technology means that it is now easier to sequence and interpret genomic
information. Therefore, DNA sequencing has advanced from being a scientific aspiration to
becoming a readily available technique for ascertaining an individual’s unique genetic blueprint.
Nonetheless, whether the genomic information is being utilized for clinical purposes or research,
it is essential to take into consideration the possible privacy and ethical concerns surrounding
DNA sequencing. There are vast quantities of genome sequence data in clinical, research and
social environments, therefore, raising complex questions and ethical concerns on how to protect
the privacy of the person whose genomes have been sequenced.
