EN106 Park Week 3 Educational Inequality in US & Income Inequality Essay
In Essay #2, write an essay that makes a thesis-based argument about education. Your essay must respond specifically to at least one of the assigned articles from Ch. 14. You will choose the audience for your essay, but remember: your job is to "enter the conversation" about education begun by your sources. Your essay should include all of the following features:A precise thesis, or main claimA clearly defined audienceDirect quotations or paraphrases of at least 1 article from Ch. 14 of From Inquiry to Academic WritingYour instructor may provide more specific instructions for this assignment -- check the Announcements for any updates or changes. Guidelines for Essay #2Length/Due Date: approximately 800-1,000 words, due Sunday midnight Central Standard Time (CST).Style/Format: This, as all essays in EN106, should be formatted in a standard scholarly format. (Most students follow MLA or APA guidelines, which are outlined in Easy Writer.) No matter what format you follow, be sure to do the following:Use 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced.Use 1-inch margins top, bottom, and sides.Although no cover page is needed, you should include your name, my name, the course number/title, and date at the upper left-hand corner of the manuscript.References: Your essay must use at least one source -- the article from Ch. 14 that has begun the conversation. Most likely, you will also refer to additional outside sources. For each source you cite or reference in your essay, include in-text citations, using MLA or APA guidelines. File format: Please submit your essay as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. These formats are available in most word processors, including Google Docs and Open Office, and will ensure that your instructor is able to comment on your work.Works Cited/References: Please create an appropriate bibliography that lists each source you cite or reference in your essay. Use MLA or APA guidelines for your bibliography.Titles: Include a descriptive title at the beginning of your essay that tips your readers off to your thesis. Do not format your title with quotation marks, boldface, underlining or italics. Quotation marks or underlining are only appropriate if the title borrows words from another source.Deadline: Submit your final draft essay no later than midnight on Sunday at the end of this unit.Use of essays for future courses: Please understand that your essay may be used— anonymously—as a sample for future EN106 students and instructors unless you expressly request that it not be used. Your work, of course, will only be used for educational purposes.Assessment: See the Grading and Assessment content item under Course Information. Why Is This Assignment Important? This essay assignment is designed to reinforce three "habits of mind" of academic writers: making inquiries, seeking and valuing complexity, and seeing writing as a conversation.First, to complete this assignment successfully, you must read closely and analytically. In doing so, you will practice observation, asking questions, and examining varied perspectives. The issue you are writing about is multi-faceted, so you must treat it that way. Do not present a simple pro/con view of an issue. Instead, read actively, asking questions of your source. In this way, this assignment will teach you to recognize and value complex perspectives -- another habit of mind of effective academic writers. Finally, completing this essay assignment will help you see how writing is a conversation. Each article is "in conversation" with other articles. Your job will be to "synthesize," or tie together diverse perspectives. By arguing your own position to your chosen audience, your essay will also add to the academic conversation.

film Crash (directed by Paul Haggis; released in 2004) crisis intervention essay, sociology homework help
The Academy Award-winning feature film Crash (directed by Paul Haggis; released in 2004) takes place in Los Angeles over a two-day period, during which the lives of the people depicted in the film literally “crash” into each other in various ways, creating crises of different types. For your Portfolio Project, you will view this film and use selected portions as the scenario on which your project will be written. You will watch the film..Select two of the incidents shown in the film that illustrate two different crisis situations and write an essay that meets each of the following requirements for each of the two movie clips. For each incident:Describe the incident you have chosen to analyze and explain how it fits the definition of a crisis.Apply a crisis intervention theory to each incident and discuss how it applies.Conduct an assessment of the crisis situation and the skills needed to work with it, including applicable issues of gender, culture, and race.Analyze ethical concerns related to the crisis.Discuss how you would intervene as a crisis intervention counselor and describe and justify the outcome you would seek.Discuss the agencies or services that would work to deal with the crisis, discussing the roles played by each and describing how the agencies would work together.Once you have done this for each of the two movie clips, write a conclusion section that compares and contrasts your analyses of the two situations and draws broad conclusions about best practices in crisis intervention counseling.Your Portfolio Project should include the following sections:Cover page in APA formatTable of contentsAn introduction that describes the paper and its intentThe body of the paper that analyzes the two film clipsA conclusions section that draws the work together and discusses best practicesReference list in APA format.Discuss and cite at least three credible or scholarly sources other than the assigned readings to support your analysis and positions.

English Satire Essay
For this Unit Project, you will be writing a satirical essay
addressing a problem in your community. You may choose community on any
level: local, school, national, or world. You may choose a topic as
large as global warming or as focused as uniforms in your high school. I
recommend choosing something on the national scale for ease of
research.Possible topics could include:Global warmingHealth careFood stamps or unemployment benefitsGun controlImmigrationNSA domestic surveillanceGay marriageMarijuana legalizationNational debtEducation reformThese are a few suggestions, but you may choose any topic that you
can satirize. (The exception to this is abortion rights. This topic is
off-limits for this essay.)Once you have chosen a topic, your paper should explain the debate:What are the arguments on either side? What logical, ethical, and emotional appeals are used?Who are the key figures in the debate (politicians, actors, news pundits, etc)?Use a minimum of four quotes, properly cited. Then, propose a ridiculous solution to the problem. Proceed with your
paper by using logical, ethical, and emotional appeals to make a
satirical case as to why your ridiculous solution is the "best"
solution.Your whole essay should be written in a satirical tone, in the way that Swift does in Modest Proposal. (You can also refer to Stephen Colbert as an excellent modern example.) Sell your solution! You must use all three of the following satirical devices:Exaggeration or hyperboleUnderstatementIrony or Sarcasm Now that you have constructed your satirical argument, turn that into
a multi-media presentation. Turn your argument into either a video or a
PowerPoint presentation.
Here, give you argument more dimension. Your presentation should include a variety of additional materials:
Video clips from key figures in the debateSound
MusicA recording of your voice
PicturesAnimations
This essay should be between two and five pages (500-1250 words)
in length. Your final draft should be saved and submitted as .doc or
.pdf file. It should be in 12-point font in Times New Roman. Your
presentation must be at least three minutes long or include a minimum of ten slides.
10% of your grade will be on grammar and mechanics. Write as clearly and correctly as you can. This means that 90% of your grade is based on your ideas - however, you will not earn an A if you do not proofread carefully and check for errors.
Most importantly, remember this is a culminating project for the Satire Unit. Your essay should show everything you have learned throughout the unit.
