English 100 November 2018 Short Story Assignment Our next major assignment is our creative short story. There are not too many rules to stifle our imaginations, however, please observe the following guidelines and rubric below for essential elements and grading features. Guidelines Please compose an original short story in the narrative fiction style. The subject matter and genre is up to you! Length: At least 1250 words. Include a word count. Basic MLA formatting. Til is not necessary for this assignment. Do not refer to the instructor within your story ("D"). Keep the scenes and drama tight right the end. Remember, you will need to revise and edit everything you produce. Be prepared for Peer Feedback Draft Due: Tues (11/20) for Peer Review/Revision Workshop. I will return the Draft and peer reviews to you on Tues (11/27) for revision and editing Final Version Due: Tues (12/4). I will return everything on Thurs (12/6). The Story must possess the following features: At least 2 major characters who interact, think, feel, and share meaningful dialogue that helps move the plot and story forward. A consistent POV, setting and time structure, and a narrative voice which is consistent, reliable or unreliable, limited or omniscient. A structure largely consisting of focused scenes and transitions. Exposition and detailed description as needed are fine of course! Consider conflict, climax, scene structure advice: stick to 1-3 focused scenes), irony, suspense, symbolism, and other literary devices and elements. Characterization is everything!
