An Introduction to Leadership
The chapter introduces the key concepts and models that will be used throughout the
book. Susan et al. starts by explaining the six foundational principles of leadership showing that
leadership is a concern for us all, it is valued differently by different cultures, it is exhibited in
many ways, qualities and skills of leadership can be learned, how views of leadership has
changed over time and lastly how leadership committed to ethical actions encourage change and
social responsibility. The chapter also explains the three basic relational principles of leadership
process which are knowing, being and doing. These principles distinguish between a leader and a
follower. Later in the chapter, Susan et al. what defines what effective followers are and what
they are expected to do. She defines them as individuals who have high commitment and can
function well in a change-oriented team environment. They are expected to offer support to the
leader, take initiatives, seek and encourage honest feedback, keep the leader informed and
showed appreciation to the leader among others.
The Changing Nature of Leadership
This chapter opens the reader’s mind to contemporary leadership theories and concepts
that have been developed and broadly used over the years. The author shows how leadership

theories have changed overtime and clearly explaining how the myths and truths that people have
about leadership from the believe of being born a leader to learning how to lead. She also
discussed diverse approaches to leadership including great man approach, trait, behavior,
influence, situational contingency, reciprocal and chaos/systems approaches. Reciprocal
leadership theory emphasizes followership and sees leadership as a shared and relational process.
Different theories included in the reciprocal leadership approach include servant leadership
theory, transformation leadership theory, and followership theory. Servant leadership stood out
from the three where the leader should not only offer guidance to the followers but also works to
improve their organizations. The author concludes by discussing authentic leadership where the
leader creates honest, ethical relationships with the followers by acting in a real, genuine and
sincere way.
The Relational Leadership Model
The chapter presents a relational leadership model that a leader should consider then
building their philosophy. The author first introduces the Knowing-Being-Doing model that
