Fake news refers to any propaganda, unconfirmed and fabricated information that is
spread deliberately through print outs, broadcast news media or even social media in the online
platforms. In politics, this term may be used mostly to serve as a defense mechanism over
allegations made on someone. This is because it contains information which may be misleading
to the public; it is because of this that it is termed misinforming. There is always a purpose to one
writing and publishing fake news, it may be intended at spoiling somebody’s legacy or to
achieve some intended gains from misinforming people. Gains earned from creating fake news
may include publicity and finance in cases when someone is paid to publish (Miller & Ron,
2018). Financial gains may also come from number of views, likes, and people who share; there
are some websites that pay people through these factors. Study on fake news detection procedure
is one of the measures that should be taken to avoid fake news. In this paper, the discussion will
be about all that anyone interested to study about fake news will need to know.
There are some cases when people may confuse parody and satire, the two are just kinds
of informative actions which are aimed at amusing people, and they do not mislead people. The
increase rate at which fake news has increased in the modern day life is so alarming. To some
extent, it is arguable that one of the main causes is increased technology that is accompanied by
increased unemployment which makes people to engage themselves in online advertisements
that is intended to earn them revenue. This pushes most of them to publish fake news so as to

attract the attention from members of the public. Development of Facebook, easy access to these
news and political issues are among the factors that have contributed towards creation of fake
news (Flower 2018). Elections in countries are among the political issues that contribute to
misinformation.
Creation of fake news makes it hard for the public to trust the news media for lacking
information of that sort; this makes it difficult for some journalists to be trusted too for the
information that they provide the public. Face book has made it easy for members of the public
to criticize such media. However, there have been condemnations on people that promote
formation of fake news websites. They are condemned for making it hard for fake news creators
to be identified for prosecution.
There are factors to consider when one needs to identify fake news, these were developed
by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions with a purpose of helping
people differentiate fake news from factual information. With this it would help to counter the
rapid increase in fake news cases. These processes include: Considering the source of
information, reading beyond headline given, finding which authors are involved in printing it,
any sources which help to support the information, checking on the date of publication, checking
if it is a joke, comparing if the information is affecting the judgment in the reader who is gauging
that information (Steinmetz, 2018) and then lastly asking the experts about that information.
A check on the source is to determine which mission is to be achieved by that
information. By reading beyond lines, one will be able to understand the whole issue that is
communicated in the subject information. When the authors are checked, the purpose of this is to
ensure they are genuine and separate them from incredible authors. The supporting sources are

checked to ensure the claims are supported by them or they are just fabrications. The date of
publication is always required in evaluating if the story is relevant and up to date or it is just a
story derived from past publications. Checking if the issue is a joke will help the reader to
identify if it I a parody or satire. Finally when someone evaluates if the information is affecting
personal judgment of the publication, then he/she may decide to go for expert opinion from
trained experts who are neutral.
During the year 2015 there was a fact finding organization which was formed called;
Fact-Checking Network. It works by training experts on detecting fake news and collaborative
works that helped them in development of a process of vetting journalists’ organizations or
groups. This has enhanced the schools to come up with journalism course choice called ‘Media
literacy’ that deals with checking the extent to which information is true or ...
