Overview
The pharmaceutical industry is faced with a major challenge of implementing seamless
development projects that promote efficiency in the production of new drugs. This follows the
increased cost of healthcare services as evident from both Starbucks and General Motors. The
case study notes that the cost of healthcare has increased as compared to the cost of acquiring
coffee and steel which are the core materials used by the two companies. The pharmaceutical
industry has embarked on the process of improving the efficiency of the drug manufacturing
process with these effort bearing great fruits by improving the process and productivity in new
drug production.
For instance, the pharmaceutical industry has managed to discover an earlier
determination of a drug’s toxicology profile (Bode-Greuel, & Nickisch, 2008). It has also
managed to discover early tests meant for investigating new drug suitability as a candidate for
oral administration. In addition, the companies in the pharmaceutical industry now are not
concerned with how good they are in drug production doing but whether they are producing new
drugs in the right way. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical industry has solved the process issues by
a shift from trying to enhancing effectiveness to having a greater emphasis on the applied
process efficiency. All these have been made possible because the pharmaceutical industry has
now placed more emphasis on portfolio management than ever.
As such, the pharmaceutical industry organizations have now been able to maximize the
value of R & D portfolios through portfolio management because it has facilitated effective and
efficient resource allocation. These organizations are using portfolio management to strategically
align their new drug development with their strategic business objectives. This is the same case
for BL & Diamond pharmaceutical Ltd which a multinational corporation based in the United

States. BL & Diamond Pharmaceutical Ltd operates in the larger pharmaceutical industry. The
company has a four-drug development portfolio.
These drugs are represented by the drug candidate LC-1, LC-2, LC-3, and LC 4. The
drug candidates undergo four different development phases and currently, drug candidates LC-1,
LC-2, and LC-3, are in phase II while drug candidate LC-4 is in the preclinical phase. The
remaining cost of completing the remaining drug development process is estimated to cost BL &
Diamond Pharmaceutics Ltd $1,220 MM. In addition, at completion drugs, LC-1, LC-2, LC-3,
and LC 4 are estimated to have an approval rating of 75%, 50%, 75%, and 580% respectively. In
addition, at completion drugs candidate LC-1, LC-2, LC-3, and LC 4 are expected to earn BL &
Diamond Pharmaceutics Ltd profit margins of 90%, 90%, 80%, and 82% respectively.
Project Hierarchy
BL & Diamond Pharmaceutics Ltd is undertaking a program comprising of four new
drug development projects. These drugs are represented by drugs candidate LC-1, LC-2, LC-3,
and LC 4. The first project involves the development of drug LC-1 which is a phase II. This
phase requires 730 days to be complete. Similarly, the second and third projects for drugs LC-2
and LC-3 respectively also requires 730 days because the two projects are also in phase II. The
fourth project involves the development of drug LC-4 which is in the preclinical phase. The
fourth project is far ahead of the other 3 projects. It is in the testing stage that three years.
On the other hand, the four drug development program is the drug development portfolio
for BL & Diamond Pharmaceutical Ltd. The remaining part of the portfolio is estimated to cost
BL & Diamonds Pharmaceutical a total of $1,220 MM. The drug portfolio has an average
approval rate of 70% and an average profit margin of 86%. Within this portfolio, drug LC-4 has

the least chances of technical success at 70% while drug LC-1, LC-2, and LC-3 has a high
chance of technical success with a probability of 100%, 100%, and 80% respectively. The entire
drug development portfolio has high chances of being successful due to excelle...
