Tu Youyou is a Chinese educator, a pharmaceutical chemist and Nobel Prize winner in the
physiology of medicine in 2015. She was born 30 December 1930 and well known for her
discovery of artemisinin and dihydroartemisinin that brought a significant breakthrough in 20th
century towards the treatment of malaria saving millions of lives in South Asia, South America,
and Africa. Due to lack of effective Malaria treatment in the 1960s, Tu turned to traditional
medicine while seeking to tackle the challenge of developing “novel Malaria therapies”. She
extracted Artemisia annua plant component (later called Artemisinin) and was the first person to
show how highly effective it was in fighting malaria parasite in both infected humans and animals
(Animal Research Info, 2015).

May-Brit Moser born in 1963, Norway, is yet another lady who received a Nobel Prize
alongside Edvard Moser and John O’Keefe for the physiology of medicine in 2014. They
