Introduction

The existence of businesses around the globe has one major objective and that is to
increase in profit margins. Every business thrives to ensure that any opportunity that comes its
way if fully exploited for the business gain. One major thing that has robbed business profit is an
enemy within called stress. As employees and stakeholder thrive to make profit stress has always
robbed businesses millions of dollars (Michie, 2018). In this paper, I will address issues
related to stress, causes of stress and how stress can be managed to increase employees’
profitability in an organization.
Causes of stress in the workplace
Stress is the body mechanism response to protect the body against danger or threat and
demand. When the physical resource is unable to meet the current demand, the result brings
stress in an individual. Stress in an individual are expressed through the change of behavior like
withdrawal, being anxious, a problem to focus and lack of concentration and sometime a person
may develop a headache. In the workplace stress lead to low inputs of employees, absenteeism,
unhealthy relationship, costly labor force, and costly health care (Michie, 2018). There many
factors that lead to stress and if mitigated early when detected, this can save the company many
dollars. Some major stress facilitator in the workplace includes;
Work-related stress has been found to come from work description, social and
organization structure. Work-related stress come from overwork, lack of meeting deadlines,
working long hours, performing complex tasks, lack of break and poor working environment.
