About Me and This Showcase Portfolio My name is Aleesa Sells and I am a senior here at Arizona State University studying Accountancy. In May 2019, I will be graduating with a Bachelor’s degree and starting a fulltime position in Financial Audit for the State of Arizona Auditor General. I am blessed to have attended the university as first-generation student on a full-ride scholarship and even more fortunate to have found employment so soon. I thank God for this success. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with boyfriend and family. My niece and nephew are also a big part of my life. They are so young and adorable, so it’s important to me to spend this time with them while I can and before life gets more hectic. Recently, I found that I have a love for painting and enjoy going to painting classes and creating pieces of art to decorate my room, and soon to be apartment. As some of you may already know, I am a student in the ENG 302: Business Writing course. Throughout this semester, I have grown tremendously as a professional writer, and have learned the do’s and don’ts of such technical writing. As students, we generally write in a more long-winded, and detailed manner. In the business world, the audience for our writing is not academics or scholars. They are business people who are short on time and need clear and concise information as quickly as possible. Throughout this portfolio, you will see the work I completed this semester. I have learned how to more effectively conduct research, analyze business scenarios, write formal memos, and learned a few life lessons through our discussion board posts. In this course, there were three main writing assignments that are briefly highlighted below: 1. Cover Letter, Complaint Letter, and Memorandum 2. Professional Profile and Thank-You Letter 3. Internal Memorandum/Short Report Peer Review – E-Portfolio Showcase (Revised July 2017) Shavawn M. Berry, MPW English 302 - Business Writing For peer review of the e-portfolio, focus on these areas as you do review for ONE person today. Name of Writer: Name of Reviewer: 1. Audience - Is it clear what sort of audience the portfolio targets? Is the language and information appropriate for that audience? What could be changed to improve things (if there is a problem)? Please state who the audience is (from your perspective). 2. Describe the “look” of the portfolio. Has the writer used a dark font on a light background or a light font on a dark background? (Black lettering on a brown background is a design NONO!) Are the pictures used clear and appropriate? Are the graphics appropriate? (i.e. Do not fill your site with photos of piles of money if you are majoring in finance or accounting.) Is ALL OF THE TEXT in the same font? Are headings and subheadings used consistently throughout the portfolio? Are all the items on the menu for the site spelled correctly? 3. Look for clarity, conciseness, and appropriateness in the language. Does the portfolio sound warm and friendly? Is the tone appropriate? It should sound professional but conversational in tone. Does it have a variety of sentence structures? Does it avoid repetitive language? Make a note of repetitive words or phrases. Does it avoid jargon and highfalutin language? (I the undersigned do hereby move that you, the recipient, undertake the position our firm has so warmly and generously offered you as an option for your future career...BLECH!!!!) Clear, concise, direct and to the point! 4. Is there enough detail to "get to know" the person through his or her portfolio? What could be added? Is there anything that feels inappropriate or too personal for a professional site? 5. Take the time to really carefully read the text backwards in each section to find sentence level errors, diction problems, spelling, and punctuation errors. Point these out to the writer. 6. Does the portfolio contain all the elements of the assignment? About Me and This Showcase Portfolio (500 words) • One paragraph (minimum) summary introducing the student's portfolio. Might include brief information about degree focus, internships, etc. • Is everything included that should be according to the instructions? Link to LinkedIn account? Professional photo of the person? Make a note of anything that is missing. Each Major Assignment in Finalized, polished form: Assignment 1? Assignment 2? Assignment 3? Final Reflective Letter for the Semester? Is this formatted correctly like the example I provided? Finally, please take time to respond with 3 sentences to EACH of the section/pages of the portfolio. Do not simply say "Looks good!" Tell the writer WHAT looks good, how come it works, etc. About Me/Introductory Page Assignment 1, 2, 3 Final Reflective Letter Overall impression of the portfolio? Has this person represented his or her work professionally? If so, in what way? If not, what could be improved? This is a graded portion of the course. Points value = 50 points. Please take time to do a solid and careful review, giving the recipient the kind of care that you expect them to take with your work.
