PROJECT

Activity Instructions

Write an analytical paper on the novel you have been reading

Incorporate peer feedback and comments from your presentation submitted

Analyze a deeper meaning you found in the novel. Critically examine themes, symbols, ironies, and social impact; however, do not simply summarize the story. Instead, use short quotes and paraphrase ideas from the story to support your thesis and illustrate your ideas.

The thesis should be in the first paragraph, and your support will come from the novel itself, as well as other, peer-reviewed resources you use to illustrate and support your point. You must cite all sources you use from the Internet, both in your paper and on a Reference page.

When writing about stories or novels, do not spend more than one short paragraph on the plot. DO NOT RETELL THE STORY OF THE STORY OR NOVEL IN YOUR PAPER.

APA format suggests no more than 5% of your paper should be direct quotes. Instead, use your own voice and words to reflect the author’s meaning, while giving credit to others’ research. Review the Purdue OWL Avoiding Plagiarism web page for tips on how to incorporate resources into your writing.

Your paper must include the following:

  • Title page
  • Abstract
  • Body of paper
  • Annotated bibliography (include all sources)
  • Reference page
  • 8-10 pages (approx. 300 words per page), not including title page or references page
  • 1-inch margins
  • Double spaced
  • 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Reference page (minimum of 6 resources – in addition to your selected novel)

Peers Posts Macie Post 1-The Revolutionary Road is about a man named Frank, who returned from War World War II and his whole life changed. Frank is a young man who tries to find himself in life. Instead of finding himself, he finds a girl named April Johnson. April is a beautiful young woman but has some emotional issues. Sometime after Frank met April, they got married and had children together. April is not fully happy with her life, she has everything she could possibly want but it is not enough for her because she wants to become an actress. April lets her marriage become distant and it tears up the family. It seems that all of the characters in the novel are engaged in some degree of self-deception. Once the marriage became distant, Frank committed adultery with his college. Later on, April decided to they both needed to move to Europe in order to repair their relationship and the thoughts of their plans did help restore a lot. But then once their friends heard of the news, everyone reacted differently. April found out she was pregnant with her third child and then April was destroyed. She wanted so much more in life and having a child in her mind ruined that for her. In her sorrow feelings, she tried to have an abortion which failed and she later died in the hospital. From the last note April left Frank, he finally realized that April never really loved him. Frank was never able to recover from that and abandoned his own children. Heather Post 2- I choose to read I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban. Malala is a young Muslim girl living in Swat Valley, Pakistan. As a young girl, Malala was privileged with opportunities that many other girls in her community were denied. Outraged by the social injustices and oppression of Muslim women, Malala became an activist for female education. Malala's story has earned her the title of youngest holder of a Nobel peace price. Malala's father was an educator in Swat and opened several schools for the community. Her father encourages her fight for education opportunities for women. The Taliban gains attention of Malala's activism and at the age of fifteen, she is shot in the head by a Taliban member. Malala miraculously lives and continues her fight for female rights to education. For my presentation, I choose to highlight the power of one little girl, Malala. Malala lived by the theory that she would rather die for her beliefs than be silenced by the Taliban. Her speeches, activism, and blogs gained national attention which highlighted the social injustices that Muslim women face. Shawn Post 3-I chose the novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, to read for the writing assignment. This novel is an extraordinary piece of literature, which documents the Native American struggle. The setting of the novel took place in the 1880s. The novel begins with the defeat of the Sioux Indians at the Battle of Little Big Horn. The novel depicts the American Government as being a “bully-like” personality. The novel depicts the American Government as persistently pushing the Sioux Indians further and further into segregation. During this time, there were meetings and attempts at coming up with a peaceful resolution to this movement. One Native American chief was steadfast in this resolution. Chief Sitting Bull was not caving to the pressures put forth by the American Government. At the end of the novel, a fight broke out at “Wounded Knee Creek in the southern part of the Pine Ridge Reservation.” (Richardson, 2015, pg. 4) Most likely, this fight broke out because of a misunderstanding of the Ghost Dance. The Ghost Dance was a symbolic and spiritual gesture performed by the Sioux Indians. This Ghost Dance was perceived by the American Government as hostility, and consequence of the Battle at Wounded Knee took place. Many Sioux Indians were killed, including women and children, and the American Government captured the land. Chief Sitting Bull, had heart throughout the struggle of maintaining the land and the Native American rights. The Sioux Indians all had heart, and their hearts were left in a place that became their final battleground; Wounded Knee Creek. Sean Post 4- My paper will address the modern commercialism that accompanies the warfare of today. Ben Fountain’s fictional novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, uses a short period of time in one young combat soldier’s return trip home to demonstrate the numerous ulterior agendas, ranging from political to commercial, of both groups and individuals. Said agendas are motivated by numerous causes, little of which are concerned with the wellbeing or safety of both active soldiers and veterans, alike. Ultimately, Fountain’s protagonist reveals numerous facets of the mental and emotional battles that soldiers experience upon returning home, as well as the low priority that the true needs of these soldiers are given. In my presentation, I will focus on the exploitative nature of the relationship between the NFL and the US military as it is portrayed in the novel, as well as the disparity in the needs of returning soldiers and the services and help provided. New York: Riverhead Books. 1 Running head: THE KITE RUNNER The Kite Runner November 17 ,2018 THE KITE RUNNER 2 ''The Kite Runner is a Shakespearean kind of narration which introduces its content to an epic tale which spans lives transversely in two continents in the course of political mayhem, where dream reality and dreams wither before they bud and where a search for a child eventually converts a coward into a fierce man. Indeed, Kite Runner is the crushing first book by Khaled Hosseini who is an Afghan doctor that got political refuge in 1980 as national conflict destroyed his homeland. Thus, this book based on the price of peace, both political and personal, and what people knowingly obliterate in the hope of realizing that, be it democracy, friends or ourselves. The complexity of the novel’s plot has a lot of various conflicts that call to mind sympathy for different characters that seem to be unjustly victimized. The story starts with the internal mayhem of Amir who is a rich child that enjoys friendship with Hassan, however, is as well jealous of him and ultimately cheats him (Hosseini, 2003). On the other hand, an external conflict takes place between the central characters, Assef. All the same, Amir travel to Afghanistan to salvage his nephew known as Sohrab, as a process to be a good person again, but he stumbles upon Assef who is a spiteful and cruel foe from the past, and currently a ruling Talib. In most ethnicities, family loyalty is placed above friendship. Though Amor did not make out Hassan as his brother, their union could not have hatched to anything except brotherly. Nevertheless, Amir was not aware of the fact that brotherhood was not as important as blood more still how people relate to each other regarding defense and treat each other. In sum, it could be Amir’s reaction would have remained the same (Herbert, 2007). For one, he viewed Hassan as a maid, but not like a brother or a friend. Besides, Amir only wanted people to recognize him and accord him attention. However, he had already gotten that from Hassan due to his patient loyalty, and there was nothing more he wanted. More still, he was already aware that he was not a righteous (Benioff & Hosseini, 2007). From instance, the way he treated Hassan when ridiculing him for his THE KITE RUNNER 3 illiteracy as well as interaction with toys and food rather than giving him apologies for taunting him. Eventually, Amri’s cowardice seems to be his nature. He was brought up in splendor as well did not know the privations others have experienced. Amir grew up trouncing from his difficulties in imaginary place and faction. Indeed he never had an actual grasp of reality. Thus he developed a fear of everything. The last conflict depicts the difference between the legal and the human rights in relation to orphans as war victims, a gap which makes Sohrab’s try to commit suicide (Blizek, 2016). Inherent conflict in the book is the unjust oppression of the innocent which is a theme that evokes the essential human rights across the globe. Conclusively, the novel offers a vivid and engaging narration which reminds people of how long they have been struggling to overcome forces of violence, the forces that still proceeds to threaten every time even in the present world. It is a compelling story indeed that talks about two boys whose association and friendship are threatened by deception as well as betrayal, however, overcome the forces of cultural barriers as well as legal boundaries. All the same, their childhood reminiscences of joyful times outlast their dreadful separation, and the unfaltering loyalty of Hassan outlines the theme of true friendship among others. This is a compelling story which although appears to be interesting, evokes a lot of
emotions on the reader. I believe the story is an interesting one though the ending seems very
emotional. I believe reading through this story will enable you identify some the themes that are
eminent just from reading through it. Love, disappointed, and betrayal are all eminent themes
that I believe you will be able to identify through the story. Although I have never read this story,
I believe it will be more interesting to read through to have an idea of how things transitioned
between Frank and April.

I believe this is a compelling story worth reading because it highlights some real life
injustices that in occurs in some societies based on some oppressive ideals. In Muslim societies,
women undergo high of oppression based on cultures that undermine their values. However,
anyone who attempts to go against such oppressive societal values is often silenced. In this story,
it I believe it will be a great opportunity to read through the life of Malala, a privileged young
Muslim girl who against all odds gets an opportunity to secure education but later on silenced
based on her fight against oppressive Muslim societal ideals that denied girls opportunity to get
education. It will also be interesting to get to the bottom line to understand how things transpired
and how she came to be killed based on her stand.

Good choice I believe! However, I am not always good in history. This story will provide
you with an opportunity to recount on the on the aspect of Sioux Indians at the Battle of Little
Big Horn which I believe was known to the Lakota and other Plains Indians as the Battle of the
Greasy Grass and also commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand. This was an armed
engagement between the combined forces of Lakota, Arapaho tribe, and Northern Cheyenne
which in essence was a battle with the U.S forces which resulted in the defeat of the U.S forces
in Great Sioux War of 1876. I believe you will enjoy reading this novel if you have basic
knowledge of Great Sioux War of 1876.

The fictional novel “Long Halftime Walk” by Billy Lynn provides a foundation for
understanding the psychological and the emotional needs of the returning soldiers. I believe this
fictional story will enhance your psychological and nursing knowledge in regards to the needs of
the returning soldiers who in most cases faces a lot of mental distress which in essence affects
their psychological needs. By reading this fictional novel, you will have an opportunity to
understand the basics of mental health problem and the psychological distress of the returning
solders. This can help champion/initiate a need to champion for more intervention to help the
returning soldiers and the veterans.
