Is gun control an effective way to control the crime in the US?
The debate over the effectiveness of gun control as an effective way to control crime has
been ongoing for several years. Some of the gun control measures taken in the United States by
the federal and state governments include increasing taxes on firearms and background checks to
prevent the guns from reaching unauthorized persons such as mentally ill or convicts to reduce
the possibility of committing an offense. Those against the effectiveness of gun control argue
that it infringes with individual rights provided in the second amendment of the constitution, the
right to own guns for self-defense. Cases of gun violence have increased all as a result of guns
reaching the wrong people. Every time a mass shooting occurs the citizens question the
effectiveness of gun control and ask for stricter gun control laws to manage the situations. Gun
control is the most effective way to reduce crime, save lives and reduce the number of juvenile
offenders.
Gun control regulations reduce the rate of crime in the United States. The high rates of
crime in the U.S are as a result of the high number of guns available among the civilians (Kleck).
Gun control reduces crime as it prevents the guns from which high-risk individuals thus reducing
the probability of committing the crime. Approximately, 3% of the U.S population owns 50% of
the guns available in the U.S. Definitely, the number of guns is higher than the population there

unlocked guns increased the chances of an individual engaging in crime. There has been an
increase in the number of school shootings most of which the attackers are underage who
