Sweden’s Political Matters
Sweden holds it general elections after every four years just like in the US. Over 7
million Swedish people have the right to vote and they have the control which political party
should represent them in the legislature, municipalities and county councils. The individuals too
have control over the politics of Sweden in other ways such as participating in referendums,
reviewing reports presented by the government and joining political parties. The Swedish
constitution dictates how the country should be run. It controls the relationship between the
powers of the president and decision-making, and normal rights and freedoms of people. There
are four important laws which have built the constitution they are, the Act of Succession, the
Fundamental Law on Freedom of Expression, Instrument of Government and the Freedom of the
Press Act.
The parliament makes judgments and the executive approves them. The government has
to submit proposals for fresh laws or adjustment of laws to the parliament. It is made up of 349
members which is Sweden’s chief representative meeting. The members of the parliament are
elected through direct elections according to suffrage for citizens of Sweden aged above 18 –
who are currently citizens or have previously been residents of the country. The general elections
to the parliament are conducted after every four years on the second Sunday of September. To
serve in a Swedish parliament, one has to be aged 18 and should be a citizen of Sweden. The
parliamentary seats are distributed proportionately in political parties to the cast votes across the
country.

The legal Systems of Sweden
The laws of Sweden are based on a civil law system. Their importance is depicted in its
dependency on statutory law. The civil law is based on classical Roman law, although founded
on the German model. The country has three levels of government: local, regional and national.
The parliament is the national lawmaking body and as said earlier, it is made up of 349 members
or the parliament. The parliament appoints the Prime Minister who in turn forms the government.
Proposals of law being drafted by the respective government ministries and subsequently passed
to the government for debate. For the quality of law proposals, the Ministry of Justice has the
general duty of making ensuring their quality.
Sweden is divided into regional and local levels which have 21 counties and 290
municipalities respectively. These levels are run by municipal and county councils (Derlén &
Lindholm, 2017). The country has the Administrative and General Courts. The administrative
courts are distinct from General Courts and are made up of 12 County Administrative Courts,
one Supreme Administrative Court, and four Administrative Courts of Appeal. The General
Courts are mandated to deal with public and illegal cases. There are 48 jurisdictional districts,
each which have their own District Court. Also, there is the Supreme Court based in Stockholm
and there are six Courts of Appeal. Also, apart from General and Administrative Courts, there
are three Special Courts: the Court of Patent Appeals, Labour Court, and the Market Court.
