Strengths: You had many strengths in your paper. You had a very powerful hook. You caught my attention immediately. You also did a great job referencing work that was not your own. You also did a good job at proof reading your paper, I noticed very few grammatical errors. Suggestions: You had a good thesis, but all of the ideas of your paper were not included in your thesis. Please be sure that your thesis is specific. For a research paper like this, the thesis should clearly state the idea, and the main points that will be discussed. You had a lot of great points in your paper, but they were not in your thesis. I was a bit confused where your paper was going, so please work on the structure. A clear thesis statement is the key to a well organized paper because it will provide a roadmap for the rest of the essay. Your paragraphs had good information, but it is important to stick to one idea in each paragraph. Once you decide the main topic the paragraph is going to focus on, then please do your best to develop that idea; and share examples and supportive research. Many of your paragraphs had quite a few different ideas in them, and you were not able to develop your topic; the way it could have been developed. The first instances of repeated issues are pointed out, and suggestions for corrections to be made are given where possible. Please use your writing resources as well as the given suggestions for corrections to help make revisions and improve your writing. You can also return to the Paper Center for additional reviews of your work. Keep up the good work, and thanks for using NetTut

Shanae' Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 2 / 11 If you are going to capitalize the first letter of words, please make all of the important words capital "Artificial Intelligence is a Threat to the Future of Humanity" This is a wonderful "hook" 15. In writing, a hook is considered to be the opening sentences in your introductory paragraph whose aim is to capture the attention of the reader. These introductory sentences are very important as they help the reader decide whether or not to continue reading your essay. When creating a thesis for a research paper, you should think about your purose and topic, and determine what the main points of the essay should be. These points must offer an idea about the scope and approach the student will take. 1. Example: "In order to fully undertstand the impact of Marie curie and her work, it is crucuial to explore her early career, her most significant discoveries pertaining to radiation, and the subsequent effect that her ideas had on science following her death." 2. Here the reader knows that he or she will earn about Marie Curie, including her early career, most significant discoveries, and later impact. These topics will be developed using academic resources and facts uncovered in the course of research. Your topic sentence should be here. A topic sentence expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs. According to your thesis statement, this paragraph should be about; "Machines can sense the world around them". But this sentence suggests the paragraph is going to be about "inventions haunting humanity". Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 3 / 11 You provided a lot of rich information in this paragraph. Please add the main idea of your paragraph to your thesis statement, so that your reader will be clear on what will be discussed. This is a great topic sentence, by reading this sentence; I had a clear understanding what this paragraph was going to be about. According to your thesis, this paragraph is supposed to be about "machines making decisions any human being would". According to your topic sentence this paragraph is going to be about "artificial intelligence being programmed to carry out devastating effects on humanity". Please try and structure your paper, to follow the outline of your thesis. Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 4 / 11 Be sure to always capitalize the first letter of a sentence. Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 5 / 11 Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 6 / 11 This is a powerful topic sentence. You made it very clear what this paragraph was going to be about. The information in this paragraph supporting the idea that (AI), can be a bad thing. Please add this idea to your thesis statement, so that your reader is aware you will be developing on this topic. How does this sentence support the idea "AI will cause anxiety because of the unpredictability"? When he topic changes, it is time to start a new paragraph. This is really good information, but it does not support the main idea of this paragraph. 8. In orde to full develop your topic, you can include specific examples whenever possible. But please be sure the examples support the topic. Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 7 / 11 THe role of the conclusion is to reiterate your thesis, summarize your main ideas, and provide closure to the essay; without adding any new information Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 8 / 11 This is a very powerful closing statement. This left me thinking about the main point of your paper. Wonderful job. Proofed Paper: ntp511950 - Sat Dec 1 1:44:42 EST 2018 page 9 / 11 It is important to ensure your references are in alphabetical order. Also please make sure if your reference is longer than one line, you indent rest of the lines; so that your reader is clear where the reference starts and ends. Artificial Intelligence is a threat to the future of humanity
The society we live in is a world of machines. Our day to day actions are dependent on
machines, with some entirely dependent on machines. Computers brought a whole new
dimension of how every field of life was to be carried out. Nick Bolstrom, in his article on the
“Ethical issues in advanced artificial intelligence”, defines artificial intelligence (AI) and further
discusses the ethical issues that arise in using them. He explains that most appliances including
televisions, cameras, traffic lights and even video games rely on ‘smart’ technology to operate.
(Bostrom, p. 277). While Artificial intelligence has been critical in advancement of several fields
such as car assembling, there are debates on whether our best invention could come to haunt
humanity. There are fears that artificial intelligence may outperform human beings and cause
unprecedented damage to humanity. Andrew Burt suggests that we “Leave A.I alone” and
explains that famous people in the field of science such as Elon Musk have put across their
doubts, and Musk has come forward to fund research into the AI to avoid any threats that it may
pose to humanity. (Burt, p. 1) In the article “Is AI a Threat to Humanity?”, Greg Scoblete
explains that Musk compares AI to summoning the devil, which could eventually be disastrous
(Scoblete, p. 1). Artificial intelligence is a threat for the future of humanity since it could be
designed for destructive purposes, could surpass human intelligence and is highly unpredictable
in its operation.

2

Artificial intelligence poses a threat to humanity in that it could be programmed to carry
out devastating effects on humanity. Artificial intelligence could lead to development of
weapons to cause harm to humanity. This technology has since been used in military operations.
Autonomous weaponry involves systems where weapons are devised with intent to kill. (Lee., p.
2) If these weapons are created by people for the wrong reasons, it could lead to devastating
effects. If people resort to the use of artificially intelligent arms, then the result will be mass
casualties. The other challenge is that malice could cause people to create dangerous autonomous
weapons that cannot be turned off by humans. Hence, the weapons will kill without control.
Artificial intelligence could be used to device malicious ways of treatment. (Lee., p. 2).
Reputable figures in science such as Stephen Hawking have given their contribution on how
much of a threat AI can be. Stephen Hawking in the article “Are We Taking Artificial
Intelligence Seriously Enough?” , he explains that AI could be the last event in history if we do
not learn to avoid the risks it poses (Hawking, 2). Hawking further explains that countries are
now considering putting in place weapons that are artificially intelligent and choose their targets
(Hawking, 2). As a result, world safety will be out of people’s hands. He expresses his worry that
in the long-term, artificial intelligence may not even be controllable at all, especially if used in
warfare.
If machines could lead to a reduction in human intelligence, then this could place
humanity's fate directly on the hands of artificial intelligence. Nick Bostrom, in his TED Talk on
“What happens when our computers get smarter?” he uses the example of the monkey and
humans (Bostrom). The intelligence of monkeys is inferior to that of humans; hence the fate of
the ape is in the hands of humanity. If this situation is reflected onto artificial intelligence, then
human beings will take up the place of the ape, with their fate in the hands of artificial

intelligence. This means that we will be subject to whichever way the intelligence decides to act.
In the likely case that it is uncontrollable, this path may most likely lead to disaster in the case of
human beings.
The major cause of anxiety as a result of artificial intelligence is the unpredictability it
comes with. Humans may create it, but once it is up and running, there is no way to predict how
things are going to go. In her TED Talk on “Machine Intelligence makes human morals more
important”, Zeynep Tufekci explains that artificial intelligence is like a black box once it is in
operation (Tufekci). We just cannot understand how it works and how to stop that which it is
intended to stop. While artificial intelligence may initially be created for good, its
unpredictability may lead to unprecedented consequences. As Tufekci explains, research shows
that artificial intelligence was shown to be biased with regards to gender, race and mental illness
(Tufekci). As a result, when relied upon for services such as hiring, its biasness then plays out.
As a result, artificial intelligence could propagate discrimination of certain groups, which may be
hard to stop since the way that discrimination comes about may not even be known. Another
example of how artificial intelligence can go out of control is in the movie “Chappie”. “Chappie”
is a movie where an artificially intelligent robot named Chappie is captured and taught by
gangsters. The robot at some point out-sits its creator and takes the creator’s consciousness and
puts it into another robot. In this case, the Chappie ended up controlling its own creator,
something that was unpredictable during its creation. When such situations happen in more
sensitive roles artificial intelligence is used in such as security, and then the effect of this
unpredictability could be even more devastating.
While Artificial Intelligence has been suspected to cause more harm than good to
humanity, there are people who believe there is no cause for worry. This school of thought

4

argues that artificial intelligence will provide a chance for the betterment of humanity.
(Yudkowsky, p. 184)Take for example, in the field of medicine; artificial intelligence with
nanotechnology would be used in research to aid in elimination of diseases. Also, artificial
intelligence could be used by countries to beef up security from unlawful individuals such as
terrorists. (Yudkowsky, p. 184)Development of artificial intelligence for military purposes could
then be controlled to ensure it lies in safe hands. Furthermore, most speculations on the possible
negative effects on humanity are based on fiction, especially movies. In reality, there is no
evidence to prove the need for discontinuation in the use of artificial intelligence. (Burt, p. 2)
The benefits of artificial intelligence are evident in several fields of society; hence, it is not wise
to put off the technology because of speculations without evident research.

Elon Musk advices

that we ought to proceed with caution, to ensure that we do not reach the point of no return. This
is because once disaster strikes, the unpredictable nature of AI means that it will be almost
impossible to stop.
Artificial intelligence is a field of computer science that enables machines to carry out
human-like executions. Artificial intelligence has become a popular field for most computer
scientists with scientists seeking to harness the intelligence of these machines to carry out several
tasks. Artificial intelligence, like any other technological ad vancement, has its pros and cons.
There is the possibility that artificial intelligence could be programmed for destruction or could
misinterpret commands leading to destruction. Also, the most disturbing problem...
