DISEASE PROCESS OF DEMENTIA

2
Introduction

Dementia is refers to a type of disease which causes decline and lose in memory and
other cognitive abilities. At later stages, those affected by the disease lose the ability to undertake
day to day activities. Statistics show that 60 to 80 percent of all cases of dementia is attributed to
Alzheimer’s disease which is associated with loss of memory, language problems, inability to
control behavior and lack of motivation to engage in productive activities. Should be noted that
dementia is not a disease in its own right but rather groups of ailments or conditions with
Alzheimer being the main cause. Apart from memory loss, other signs and symptoms related to
dementia include communication difficulties as the disease progresses, reduced ability to focus
and pay attention, reduced cognitive and judgment ability as well as problems with vision. While
aging is the main cause of dementia, depression, side effects from drug prescriptions, excessive
alcohol use, thyroid complications and deficiencies in important nutrients such as vitamins have
been linked to the progression of the condition.
In recent years, statistics indicate that cases of dementia have increased. In the U.S., for
instance, dementia is the sixth leading cause of death in the country. As such, understanding of
the possible causes, stages, effects, signs and symptoms is crucial to help reduce progression of
this condition. In addition to this, is also crucial that each and every one of us understands the
possible risks that may lead to commencement of the disease. With respect to the need to
understand more about the disease, this paper provides breakdown of the disease with respect to
possible causes, stages, effects, signs and symptoms, risks, treatment and prevention.

It is important to note that dementia is not a specific condition but rather a group of
ailments that is associated with memory loss, reduced cognitive abilities and difficulties in
maintaining proper behavioral abilities (Kitwood, & Kitwood, 1997). Besides Alzheimer’s
condition which causes 60 to 80 percent of all cases of dementia, Parkinson’s disease, vascular
dementia are the other prominent types of dementia. Because of this, it is very difficult in
identifying the specific complication causing the disease especially in the early stages of the
condition.
Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent of the type of dementia accounting for 60 to 80
percent cases, is a slow progressing condition. Person diagnosed with this condition usually live
between four to eight years and in some cases to as high as 20 years. This is especially the case if
the condition is diagnosed earlier so such that treatment and risk factors mitigation begins earlier.
