Confucianism is one of the greatest philosophies which have influenced Chinese culture
through ethics, politics, religion and economic practices. It comprises five principles which
include dignity, trust, wisdom, righteousness, and benevolence (Yao, X. 2000). It was the
foremost practice during the days of the Han dynasty. There before, it was all the principle
source and the orthodox ideology which was used to rule China. The Chinese experience free
external interferences till there was established of the Western invasion which was just okay with
Confucianism. For over the years it has undergone some transformation in order to suit the
current life. However, this owes the high opposition which it has confronted with for over the
years. During the 19thscentry Confucianism came to face one of its significant threats. This
resulted from the capitalism which brought in by the western powers and the internal rebellion as
well and after it lost both the opium wars (first and second), ways to save the empire were
strategized by the Qing government (Yao, X. 2000)..

Adaption to Christianity and Confucianism rejection through the Taiping rebellion
resulted in a mix to the people since exclusively over the years; they had practiced and believed
in Confucianism. This resulted to Wei Yuan (1794-1856), Lin Zexu (1785-1850), Zhang
Zhidong (1837-1909) and Zeng Guofan (1811-1872), acted upon them to look for ways to make
sure that Confucianism endured.
