Culture and Communication
A study by Geert Hofstede aims at providing insight between different countries and their
culture with respect to the effective interaction between people in those countries. The
interpretation to the study is that the higher the score regarding a given aspect, the more the
dimension in question emerges in respect to a given culture. In this analysis, Japan and the U.SA
compare differently in terms of the different cultural dimensions according to Hofstede.
Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions
Long-term and short-term orientations describe the ability of a society to maintaining
some of its links with its past in the process of dealing with present and future challenges. Japan
scores highly in this category, which indicates that the country takes a more pragmatic approach
by encouraging engagement of present practices and actions as a way of preparing for the future
rather than being guided by the past. The United States, on the other hand, has a low score in this
category, this indicates that it is a normative society which focuses on maintaining long-term
traditions and are suspicious of the present societal changes, thus, not pragmatic (Hofstede,
2011).
