Description
Your Saudi MNC has recently opened a subsidiary in Brazil.
You have been charged with devising a pre-departure training and development programme for six expatriate managers and their families, who are due to be sent to Brazil on three-year assignments in six months’ time. Your CEO wants the program to be developed specifically for the needs of the company, and does not want to adopt an existing program. He is also keen to keep the costs low.
Your answer should take the form ofa report to the CEO, (size 12, Times New Roman. 1.5 spaced, minimum of 8 pages) in which you make recommendationsand explain the thinking behind them.
You will also present your study to the class on Sunday 9th December. Presentations should be no longer than 10 minutes and contain a maximum of 8 PowerPoint slides.
Each group is to submit one soft copy of their written report and one soft copy of their presentation through Blackboard by midnight Saturday December 8th 2018 .
The report and presentation should address issues such as:

Introduction
The purpose of this report is to inform the management of the requirements for a pre-departure
training and development for the six expatriate managers and their families. This follows the new
venture by the management and the opening of a new subsidiary in Brazil. As it were, the
managers are of Saudi Arabian origin, and there are many differences between the business in
Arabia and that of Brazil. There is, therefore, the need to have the senior managers learn a few
things regarding Brazil before they are released for the three-year assignment. Upon a request
from the CEO, our team has embarked on rigorous research and came up with results that would
aid in the successful training of the said individuals over the next six months. The required
training sessions are not only meant to orient them with the business culture of Brazil but take a
wider dimension that would aid the managers in not only being able to run the affairs of the
mother company in a foreign place but also enable them to interact freely with the people of
Brazil.
Objective
Managers are the backbone of any organization. The aim of this training program is to sharpen
some of our finest in the organization and have them operate at a higher level. The training
program, therefore, aims at assisting the managers to understand the background of the country
they shall be operating.
Areas to be covered in the training program
As stated, the training program is not meant to orient the managers with the business culture in
Brazil but rather to make them understand different ways of life as per the people of Brazil. As
such, the pre-departure training and development program shall encompass the following
elements;
•
Cultural profile
Differences and similarities of the home and host country shall be included. There is the need to
acquaint the management team with a culture of the new country from where they shall be
operating from. The individuals tasked with the teaching of the cultural differences shall be

required to have a vast knowledge of the way of life in both countries. As such, it shall be easier
for the management team being sent to Brazil to understand the way to carry themselves once at
their posts. Notable is the fact that Brazil remains largely a Christian country while Saudi is a
Muslim dominated country. The best approach would, therefore, be to have a Brazilian living in
Saudi take up the role of delivering cultural training. This is as outsourcing an individual living
in Brazil would be costly to the organization.
•
Country profile
This session shall include generalization of information concerning the host country. As it were,
there are the basic requirements that the managers shall be required to meet before being allowed
to work in the country. Countries have different requirements for expatriates working in their
nation. The CEO together with the managers shall, therefore, be required to hold a joint training
session between them and the trainer to determine the best approach in meeting the requirements.
The faster the requirements are met, the quicker and easier it shall be for the team to get to work.
This session shall be led by Brazilian working in the diplomatic offices of the host country. This
is as they understand the requirements that foreigners working in their country should meet
before they are allowed to work in the country. There is also the issue of issuance of visas to the
country and the c...
