Description

The simulation is designed so that the team will fail if each member is not actively engaged in the problem.

This simulation and debrief will occur during a single class meeting. A portion of your grade for this

exercise will be based on your team’s relative performance in the simulation. The bulk of your grade will be

based on a 1-2 page reflection paper on your team’s performance and lessons learned from the exercise.

The reflection paper should contain:

Reflection on your intentions, thoughts, and feelings during the simulation. Integrating material from the

class readings and discussions, what elements of team dynamics made your team more effective? Less

effective? How can you incorporate these lessons to improve your performance in future team projects?

Objectives: To determine how to survive with given limited supplies after a crash landing in wilderness cold terrain. We needed to prioritize individually the fifteen (15) items per our choice of need of survival and work together as a team through a collaborated decision-making process in prioritizing the items list based on survival need. Procedure: Group broken down into four groups teams to discuss and come to consensus in order of priority what we agree will be to complete the survival task. With assumptions there is a survival situation the discussion is with just the items provided, what is the first decision to stay or move along, what do we need to have in order of priority? what and how do we survive? Responses: Construct a shelter, build a fire and boil water and make a distress signal as a group with only the items provided. Discussion of basic needs, setting the stage of common survival Types of Questions and Comments: (a) how would you react to the same emergency? Panic & Scared. Not knowing away from all safety nets is troublesome. (b) agreement was to stay and access the situation. (c) to slow down, think, identify who is in shock (d ) be in control important because it helps reduce panic, which is critical in an emergency. (e) make productive use of what is available (f) have clear thinking and perception will build with your friend on protection and maintaining confidence Page | 1 Reflection: 1. Team worked together to complete the task, there was a slight disagreement and then a split decision of staying or moving on but worked out after discussing the time of the day, the weather and temperature it was better to stay and wait for help. 2. Questions regarding survival in the make shift shelter given these limited supplies, was variable but agreed if help does not show up the survival situation is numbered in days. 3. Application of the survival techniques; the team approach was to explain their thought process on the sequential numbering of the items to identify what are the things that come to mind in answering in a rational logical reasoning that would assist in the shelter, safety and security until rescue showed up. 4. Staring with each group member explaining the different thinking process applied in each individual ranking and then as a group creating an agreement of steps to take to conclude on ranking from 1 to 15 the different items according to the necessitates of application is an outcome of a team with different views, concepts and action. 5. Agreeing on this simulation of a survival from individual ranking to a “one” team choices is a decision-making process from a team building. Our team from the outset to help us achieve our goal used analytic approach and constructive confrontation that contributed to the bonding we created because the environment and situation of survival is so compelling we have one direction to stay as a team to survive, we collectively agreed on our rankings. 6. If there was a perception of influence on the decisions and how, the female member of the team was in control by guiding the conversation and writing responses, taking that role gave the impression she was in control of the team, while the role of the other team members was giving feedback and opinion with exception of one team member who played a role to influence the decision of walking would be a better chance of survival. The final decision of the team response agreeable to all team members and all of us were comfortable. 7. My observation of the learning process of this team simulation, we drove right into our opinion and thinking cap we had on individual ranking the items and since we did not know each other we asked questions each other on the first three things ranking we had based on that we created alike thinking and agreeable points of view and built a consensus on our final ranking. If I had the same simulation again I will play the same role and have the same team response. Page | 2 Name: Winter Survival Exercise The Situation: You have just crash-landed in the woods of northern Minnesota and southern Manitoba. It is 11:32 A.M. in mid-January. The small plane in which you were traveling has been completely destroyed except for the frame. The pilot and co-pilot have been killed, but no one else is seriously injured. The crash came suddenly before the pilot had time to radio for help or inform anyone of your position. Since your pilot was trying to avoid a storm, you know the plane was considerably off course. The pilot announced shortly before the crash that you were eighty miles northwest of a small town that is the nearest known habitation. You are in a wilderness area made up of thick woods broken by many lakes and rivers. The last weather report indicated that the temperature would reach minus 10 degrees in the daytime and minus twenty-five at night. You are dressed in winter clothing appropriate for city wear-suits, pantsuits, street shoes, and overcoats. While escaping from the plane, your group salvaged the fifteen items listed below. Your task is to rank these items according to their importance to your survival. write reflection You may assume that the amount of each item is the same as the number in your group and that the group has agreed to stick together. Rank the items according to their importance to your survival, starting with "1" for the most important and proceeding to "15" for the least important! about how did you help your group survive ITEM RANK Compress kit (with 28 ft. of 2-inch gauze) Ball of steel wool Quart of 85-proof whiskey Cigarette lighter without the fluid Loaded .45-caliber pistol Newspaper (one per person) Compass Two ski poles Folding hunting knife Sectional air map made of plastic 30 feet of rope King-sized chocolate bar (one per person) Flashlight with batteries Extra shirt and pants for each person ✓ Can of shortening

As the situation describes the environment, the first problem that we are likely to face
will be the cold. The first thing is to combat the cold by finding means to keep our bodies warm
and trying to preserve the body heat by preventing heat loss. I will solve this problem by
minimizing insulated themselves as much as they can.
The other thing that we will face is the shock of the situation we found ourselves in; this
