The late 18th century and the early 19th century was a period that America as a country
experienced an increase in the number of immigrants. These immigrants would come from all
parts of the world with a majority of them coming from Europe states. President Theodore
Roosevelt then saw that the real culture and values of the American were at risk of being forgone
due to the immense external influence. For this reason, he said there was a need to assimilate and
Americanize immigrants before they are given full citizenship of America. He proposes that
immigrants need to learn the Americans' language which is English and learn the core value and
principles that govern the American people's way of life. (Library, 2016)
His thinking was also inspired by the raging World War that was going on in Europe and
other parts of the world. President Theodore Roosevelt worry was that if America became a
participant in this war, would these immigrants remain loyal to America as they fight their
country? Hence there was need to get rid of hyphenated Americans who vote or make decisions
concerning their native countries.
Senator Ellison DuRant Smith of South Carolina was also another political leader who
supported a move to block immigrants from coming to America to preserve American
Resources. The senator was for the idea that America should shut the door completely on any
new immigrants and assimilate the existing population. (Library, 2016) He points out that there
is for America to breed pure American Citizens that will maintain the American institutions in
