Part 1

Production and Procurement
The course involved several important topics. Some of the course topics included how to
create a SIPOC diagram, how to create strategy maps, dimensions of competitive advantage,
measurement and tracking of productivity, construction of flow charts, construction of fishbone
diagrams, house of quality, needs analysis and FMEA.
SIPOC Diagram
SIPOC is an acronym for suppliers, inputs, process, outputs and customers. The SIPOC
diagram is therefore an important tool used for documenting a business process from its
beginning to the end (Shankar, 2009). The SIPOC diagram can be used to identify all the
elements of a process improvement project before actual project execution. A SIPOC diagram
can therefore be useful in defining a complex process or project. ASIPOC diagram is therefore
very closely related to process mapping with the only difference that a SIPOC diagram has more
additional details than process mapping (Baxter, 2015). The SIPOC diagram helps in identifying
the suppliers of the process, the specifications of the inputs, the true customers of the process,
and the requirements of the customers (Shankar, 2009). The figure below shows an example of a
SIPOC diagram.

Figure 1: SIPOC Diagram
To create a SIPOC diagram, one should begin by mapping the process into four high
level steps. The second step is to identify the outputs of the process. Third, the customers that
will receive the outputs of the process should be identified before the inputs for the process are
identified (Shankar, 2009). Then, the inputs required by the process are identified. Finally, the
preliminary requirements of the customers should be identified.
Fishbone Diagram
A fishbone (cause and effect or Ishikawa) diagram is a tool used to categorize the
potential causes of any given problem in an attempt to identify its root causes. Fishbone
diagrams are particularly useful in structuring brainstorming sessions (Gordon, 2002). A
fishbone diagram is normally worked from right to left. Each bone contains details of the
possible causes that lead to the problem in question. The figure below shows an example of a
fishbone diagram.
