Introduction
Baptism is a practice by Christians which serves as a rite of adoption and admission
of an individual into Christianity. Baptism is as always viewed as a sacrament in some
churches while others consider it as an ordinance. Baptism is also known as Christening.
Baptism gives people who have repented an opportunity to express their faith and their union
with Jesus Christ in His death and resurrection. Churches which believe that baptism is an
ordinance argue that Christ commanded and in the book of Mathew chapter 28 verse 19-20
states that, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded
you.”Therefore, some churches baptize its members because it is a commandment from Jesus
Christ.
Baptism is recognized by denominations such as Lutheran, Presbyterian, Catholic,
and Methodist. These denominations accept their baptism methods as valid. Baptism is only
conducted once, and when somebody transfers from one denomination to another, they are
not baptized again(Spinks 2). There are three types of baptism practiced by different
Christian churches. Most churches practice baptism by immersion. Individuals beings
baptized are always submerged in water. Eastern Orthodox and some Protestant
denominations mainly practice baptism by immersion. They conduct baptism in this manner
because they copy the practice of the early church who believed that Jesus Christ was
baptized by the immersion method
