DDBA 8303 Northcentral Univ Award Winning Dissertations in Education Discussion
Answer the question and respond to the two responses:Question:Foster (2012) used the following research questions in his study to determine the elements of award-winning dissertations in education:What were the common criteria for the dissertations required by the awarding organizations? What were the common characteristics of the award-wining dissertations? What were the informal criteria applied to the award-winning dissertations by the individual review board members? What are characteristics of the dissertations made the work exceptional for award considerations?Part 1: In the first week of this module, read through Foster’s (2012) article to get the main idea and answer the following:Why did the researcher feel that this was an important topic? What did the researcher find were the common criteria and/or characteristics of awarding-winning dissertations? What is the most important information in the article? In addition, at the end of the initial post please pose an actual question or questions that occurred to you from reading the article.Ref: Foster, C. E. (2012). Analysis of elements of award-winning dissertations in education, 2005-2010. Arkansas State University).ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, 88. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/963702684?accountid=28844. (963702684)Response 1:The researcher felt that the information was important because no everyone understands the commitment, time, mental energy that goes into a dissertation. In addition, the researcher wanted to put on an emphasis on the academic rigor that every student must master that pertains to excellent dissertations. This information is important to those students that have no academic background besides their current educational endeavors. For example, I had no idea that there were different formats (traditional and non-traditional) nor was aware of all the various educational organizations that award those for excellent dissertations. In reading the article, I believe the most important aspect when it comes to a well written dissertation is the mentoring from the faculty. The experience and background with someone who has reached the pinnacle of all education achievements can help guide the student in research methodology, data collection methods, and literature review strategies. Furthermore, mentor(s) can provide a sense of direction that enable the student to demonstrate the application and/or development of theoretical models to support the understanding of concepts. Consequently, a good solid mentor may even provide the foundation in the development of new theoretical insights. As I read more into dissertations I see a common theme among all of them, and that is the gratitude from all mentors that help them get there. The question I have after reading this dissertation, why do certain scholars disagree with the notion of a dissertation not being on the grounds for an exiting document? Response 2:The first 18 pages of the book provided a lot of good information. The author felt this was an important topic because no succinct criteria has been set forth to help students, mentors, faculty advisors and ultimately the review boards rate the academic level of a dissertation. The article points out that most review board members can rate a dissertation within the first 2 chapters. By exploring common themes the author hoped to provide a roadmap to help all participants involved create higher level dissertations in the future. The common criteria that the author notes is the consistency and coherence, investigation of the problem, and the authors mastery of writing. Foster emphasizes the importance of topic selection and problem investigation as a key area that will drive an award winning dissertation. Once that topic is selected it is imperative that the author spends a lot of time researching the problem and explains how that problem will be addressed via the dissertation. The question that came to my mind was is the criteria transferrable to dissertations outside the realm of education?
