Description

Hello!

I Need detailed answers for the questions posted below.

1. 1.In Book V of Plato’s Republic, Socrates argues that women are just as able as men to be Guardians, and that they should therefore be trained to be Guardians, as well as the men. Do the reasons given in this discussion support Socrates’ claim? Why or why not? Be sure to present the reasons Socrates gives on pages 399-406[451d-457c] carefully, explaining fully the important role of the distinction he draws between eristic and dialectical discussion, picking up on the distinction he draws between them earlier in Meno, on page 65 [75d].

2. In Book VI of Plato’s Republic, takes up the question of why most people with the kind of character required to be philosophers become corrupt. Is Socrates right that the things he discusses can indeed corrupt a person with the kind of character he considers? Why or why not? In setting out Socrates’ account, please be sure both to explain what Socrates says at the end of Book V and beginning of Book VI about the philosophical nature (on pages 431-3 [479a-480a]) and to explain the ways in which the philosophical nature can becomes corrupt on pages 440-7 [490d-496e]

3. In Book VII of Plato’s Republic, Socrates discusses the Allegory of the Cave, setting out the role of the form of the good in what he believes to be the effects of a proper education on the soul of a philosopher. Is Socrates right that education can be compared helpfully to a journey that leads one beyond the world of everyday experience? Why or why not? Please be sure to present the Allegory of the Cave carefully and in detail, drawing on what is said on pages page 463-7 [514a-518d], and to explain the distinction between knowledge and belief in terms of the discussion at the end of Book VI, on pages 457-63 [506d-511e].

Plato’s Republic
Equality of Men and Women
According to Socrates, the main difference between men and women is reproductive in
nature. Beyond this women are not limited in qualities that would make them guardians such as
being rational, spirited and appetitive. As such they should be treated similarly to men when to
comes to the role of guardianship and will receive the same education and political roles as men.
Since they are weaker though, they will serve lighter roles than the men. He goes on to state that
women serving the same role as men is not only feasible but the best option when they are the
most suited to fulfill these roles. He follows to propose that guardians will not have private
families, the guardians will only have sex during marriage festivals and the children conceived
will be taken away from their mothers and reared communally. In the end, there will be no
distinction with regard to which child belongs to who. Through this system, the guardians will
not be distracted from their social roles as rulers
The reasons Socrates give are definitely sound and support Socrates conclusion. Socrates
shows that the only major difference between women and men is the fact that they are limited ...
