Democratization refers to the transition to a more democratic system of government. In a
democratic government, the leaders are elected by the citizens through a majority vote, the laws
are made by the citizens through the elected Senate, and everyone respects the rule of law. There
are also establishment of transparent and open mechanisms of economic, political and security
decision making with the inclusion of all citizens. This paper analyzes ways that democracy
promotes peace and security in the United States and the world at large.
