Online survey Day 1 a) What you did to collect data The first person to interview was my classmate who was also a good friend of mine. I called him and asked if he could help me answer some research questions related to my course. I forwarded him an email indicating my topic of research which was associated with the effect of social media on school students’ academic performance. I requested him to confirm when he would be available for the interview. b) What went well? During the interview, everything went well as my friend was welcoming and participated fully in the interview thus answering all the questions asked. My friend went ahead to elaborate his individual experience on online classes. c) What did not go well? I was a bit hesitant to ask the questions and thus I wasted more time before my friend could understand my questions. My friend too, to some extent, felt easy with the questions as he viewed them as so scary and that they might be used against him. However, I told him that the interview questions would not display the real identity of the interviewee. d) What can you try differently? To avoid tension during the interview, I would familiarize myself with the interview questions before and have confidence with what I say. Subsequently, at the start of the interview, I would ensure that the interviewee understands that their personal identity would not be revealed for whatsoever reasons. Day two a) What you did to collect data? My second interview was with ELS teacher. However, I did not have his personal contact and therefore I ask a current student to set a meeting and that I needed him to help me with some research questions. After some time, he asked me to meet him at the office prepared the interview questions and the forms to be signed during the interview. b) What went well? The entire interview went well and all the questions were answered. During this interview, I was able to explain well my questions and thus, he answered them accordingly. c) What did not go well? First, I forgot to carry out my phone and therefore I did not have a recording tool. Subsequently, as the teacher was a bit busy, he kept on receiving calls and therefore we had to take breaks while talking. d) What would try differently? Before going to an interview, I would ensure all the tools required during the interview are packed including my phone to avoid inconvenience. Subsequently, I would try to convince the professor to hold the interview when he is away from his office work. Day three a) What you did to collect data? My third interview was with an Indian friend. I contacted the student via Skype as I didn’t have her new number. I explained to her about the details of the research paper and she confirmed that she would help with the research questions after her classes at 5 pm on Thursday. I submitted to her the research questions in which she was to fill in and sign the consent form. b) What went well? First, I explained to the her that the information given during the interview would reveal her personal identity and she should be comfortable while answering the questions. c) What did not go well? The interviewee had the challenge of understanding as well as communicating in English. I, therefore, had a difficult time trying to elaborate the questions as well as understanding the response. d) What would you try differently? In a future interview, I would engage a personal interpreter who fully understands English as well as the Indian language. These would ensure that the challenge of the language barrier is fully solved.
