The AIDS Crisis and the LGBT Community
The HIV/AIDS crisis continues to be a significant health issue in the US and many other
parts of the world. While considerable scientific advances have made it easier to prevent the
disease, no cure or vaccine has been discovered yet. The scourge thus continues to traumatize
many people due to the debilitating health effects of the infection, as well as issues of stigma and
social discrimination of the victims. The LGBT community includes groups of gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender individuals. Recent research indicates the AIDS crisis has had a
negative impact on these people. In the US, an approximate 1.2 million people are living with
AIDS, and 55% of the people living with are from the gay and the bisexual community
(O’Leary, 2016). The rate of infection of the HIV among the gay and bisexual community
continues to increase, indicating a sub-crisis of AIDS in the LGBT community.

considered an epidemic, it would later be referred to as the acquired immune deficiency
syndrome (AIDS). In those early stages of understanding the diseases, it was often related to the
gay community and was labeled a “Gay Plague” (Boskey, 2018). Some individuals even
mistakenly referred the disease to as “gay-related immune deficiency.” The increased
misinformation led to an increase in homophobic tendencies towards the gay community from
the people in society.
In the 70s and 80s, gays were considered minorities in society; however, after seeking for
equal rights, equality of rights was granted to them in urban areas such as New York and San
Francisco. With the spread of AIDS disease in the early 80s, the gay freedom would only be

lives of the gay community in high numbers, a phenomenon that changed the perception of the
gay peoples (Larsson, 2017). Stigma affected the gay people as they questioned why they were
