History of Labor and Work in the U.S. 1880-1945 Final Exam The exam includes two (2) questions and you must answer both. Each question is worth 10 points for a total of 20. There are no requirements for how much or how little you write in order to answer each question. I'm looking for the right answers—logical and coherent paragraphs and nothing more. So the length is totally up to you and whatever you think it takes to answer each question and get full credit A few tips (same as the mid-term): I am not interested in long quotes or citations. You need only use the assigned readings and class discussions to answer the questions. I also encourage you to refer to the handouts and documentaries (e.g., With Babies and Banners (see You Tube) and The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter (see RU Library-you can stream it on line) And in terms of structure, you will get more points if your answers are well organized with good introductions and conclusions (the stuff we have been emphasizing all semester). Finally, I would encourage you to develop good outlines of your answers before you start writing. A good outline will insure that you don't forget important information and it will help you organize your thoughts into logical, coherent answers. Questions: 1. Why was the sit-down strike at Flint, Michigan, the most consequential work stoppage of the entire twentieth century? What were the workers demanding? Why were they able to succeed when the industrial workers of previous generations had failed? And what linked the industrial workers in Flint to workers of previous generations (e.g., the Knights of Labor, the craft workers at Homestead, the railroad workers of 1877 and the Freemen of the early 19th century)? 2. Please explain how the demands of the WWII economy dramatically changed the make up of the workforce and raised the expectations of workers who were previously seen as ancillary, or of little to no importance to the overall economy. Your answer should include an assessment of how the work experience raised the expectations of women and minorities and the role that unions played as this transformation of work took place over a very short period of time (1941-'45)

1936 and 1937. The strike was organized by the United Automobile Workers (UAW) which had
been formed in the year 1936. Through this union, many problems that faced the workers were
settled when General Motors gave in to the demands presented by the union. With this agreement
occurring, its inspired unionization for workers against big corporations that were willing to
make the workers suffer. The union UAW transformed to United States Automobile industry.
Demands presented by UAW
During this sit-down strike, the union had a list of demands that each member felt was an
infringement on their rights. These demands included improvement of the safety of the working
conditions. The General Motors industry had insufficient safety appliances such as gloves to
prevent the heat, lack of heating, ventilation and air- conditioning systems in the working areas,
properly maintained machines that are being used to make the cars and so on and so forth. These
particular neglect in appliances led to many workers experiencing accidents where they lose their
arms or legs or even los...
