ABSTRACT: The main objective of the experiment is to learn how model a dynamic system of a vehicle. The two degrees of freedom system is displacement x and angle theta. The vehicle is traveling 50km/hr on a rough road whose surface varies sinusoidally with an amplitude of 10 mm, and the wavelength is 5 meters. Using Lagrange’s Equations, we were able to find the two equations of motions associated with the system. From there created a simulation of the system using Simulink plugging in the numbers given in the manual. Once the original plots are found, an optimized system was created; where the amplitude have to be less than 2.5 mm and the pitch angle less than 10^-3 rad. The initial results showed an improvement in the system with longer time to reach the steady state condition. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In the experiment a two degrees of freedom system was studied and a simulation was created using Simulink. The original given numbers were compared to the optimized numbers where the amplitude have to be less than 2.5 mm and the pitch angle less than 10^3 rad. The system witnessed a reduction in amplitude and pitch angle as it is the requirement. Yet the time to reach the steady state was dramatically increased. Meaning that for the smaller amplitude, it needs longer time for the system to recover form the transient condition. In addition, using Matlab, the natural frequencies was found where the first natural frequency was 5.2316 rad/s and second was 7.1680 rad/s. The mode shapes turned out to be -0.9436 / 0.3310 for the first condition and 0.3310 / 0.9436 for the second condition.
