Introduction
Based on the theory of Pearce and Cronen (1980), the Coordinated Management of
Meaning Theory (CMMT) postulates that human beings who are interrelating establish the
meaning of their conversation and comprehend the social world by relying on particular contexts
and situations (Reisinger & Dimanche, 2009). Therefore, the CMMT claims that the meaning
can be developed and understood by gaining some coordination and rationality. The overall idea
of the theory is that individuals construct their realities socially, and more explicitly, through
conversations (Wilson, 2015). The theory was designed to address pressing social issues and
challenges so as to develop a better social world. The theory further notes that the social worlds
are invented and made by our own behaviors and actions. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to
analyze the Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory.
Rationale for Choosing the Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory
I was drawn to the coordinated management of meaning theory since it describes how the
process of decoding communication allows for the goal to improve people’s communication.
Furthermore, through the analysis and comprehension of this theory, it will be easy to develop
and manage social reality as it describes the way communicators make sense of the world they
live in (Coates et al. 2016). Essentially, it is through our interrelatedness that we are able to find
