The meaning of imago dei is described as “the image of God” and refers to God’s imprint upon all humans as his special creation (Religion facts, 2017). Every religion has their own Christian viewpoint on what they believe regarding imago dei and its existence. It’s important to incorporate imago dei into healthcare since respect and compassionate care are the cornerstone for providing quality care to patients. According to Puchalski, those patients that believed in the loving presence of God were able to feel comfort and reassurance with their disease, cope with pain and able to accept death and dying much easier (Puchalski, 2001). It’s important as nurses to understand what our patient’s spiritual preferences are since it will help determine why they choose certain treatment options for their healthcare.
