EULOGY OR COMMEMORATIVE SPEECH Here’s a good link with suggestions for a eulogy or commemorative speech http://www.write-out-loud.com/eulogy-write.html (opens in new window) Preparing Your Ceremonial Speech Be certain to review the section called, “Resources for Writing a Ceremonial Speech”:     Look at the sample speeches in your eBook Review the pdf of the “basic guidelines” for this assignment o First, choose which type of ceremonial speech you want to do. Do you want to give an award? Receive an award? Offer a toast? Commemorate someone? o The pdf gives you the “recipe” for each of the different types o Note the details at the bottom of the instructions:  You’re aiming for 2 minutes – somewhere between 1-2 minutes; and keeping it under 5 minutes  You’ll include at least one story and one fitting quote or metaphor. Note how all the examples do this. As with any speech, ask yourself: what stories, what facts, and whose testimony or quote can I use to bring this person to life for the audience? I suggest you take a look at the samples listed in Blackboard: o Especially look at Robert Duvall’s toast. Not only is it fun to hear him speak about George Lucas, but it’s a good example of a 1 ½ minute toast. Note how he uses stories, facts, testimony and a quote. o You’ll see a commemorative speech I wrote about my aunt. That one does run around 4 minutes. o You’ll also find tips for creating wedding toasts. This assignment not only gets you points in your gradebook, but also provides you an opportunity to practice for any future special occasion speeches you might find yourself giving. Then, submit your speech in the next module:  By now, you know how to do that! That’s it! Signed, sealed, and delivered! Yippee!
