Creative Process of Bob Marley
a) Introduction
For many artists, especially musicians, they have had their share of the moment they sit
and try to come up with a creative song that will become a big hit. As this happens, it becomes
difficult to come up with the first line that will kick off the lyrics writing of a great song. For
most musicians, all they want is to create a song that transcends over various generations and
still overcome the test of time. Collins (2016) speaks of the creative process of musicians being a
daunting task before the musician gets to make what they may call the desired outcome. Even
during the writing sessions, the artist is faced by various issues of self-doubt since most of them
are their own worst critic. As all this happens, they undergo various obstacles such as lacking
what to write about. For some, it is using old lyrics to come up with a new song while for others,
it means starting from scratch, which is still not an easy task. Creativity does not come naturally
especially when seeking a hit record that will leave fans wanting more. It calls for finding ways
to motivate oneself, overcoming self-doubt and making music that will be worldly accepted,
which is not always easy as it sounds. Hence in this paper, I will evaluate the creative process of
one of the greatest reggae artist whose music has transcended various generations and still is
referred to as the best even by the generations that were not alive during his time. This artist is
none other than Robert Nesta Marley, commonly known as Bob Marley.
Bob Marley was born on 6th February 1945, to his parents, Norval Sinclair Marley and
Cedella Booker in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica. According to Salewicz (2014), he grew up
and experienced various hardships in life since Trenchtown was a ghetto for most poor people in
Jamaica. It was full of crime as well. He did get financial support from his father who was a

white Jamaican but rarely did they meet. He went to Stepney Primary and Junior High School,
which was situated in Saint Ann, Jamaica. This is where he started his music career. He grew up
to be known for various hit records such as Three Little Birds, No Woman, No Cry, Redemption
Song, One Love, Is This Love?, Kaya, Stir It Up, Could You Be Loved, Get Up Stand Up,
among many others. His music has even gone to inspire many and getting various music awards
and honorary accreditation. But all this did not happen to Bob overnight, but it did take various
writing sessions that he struggled with to make these great hits.
b) His creative process
His creative process entailed using the knowledge he had and what he had acquired from
various influential people in the world like Marcus Garvey, Mahatma Gandhi among others.
According to Gordon (2017), he read into messages of such leaders and the message of the
Rastafari religion which allowed him to become more knowledgeable in the way he crafted his
lyrics. He also had meditation session where he would read the Bible to allow him to become
more creative in various ways he could write and on various issues he could speak about. One of
