HIST 114: Final Exam Due Date: Please post on Canvas in a single document your answers to the questions below by Monday, December 10 at 3 p.m. 1.) Foreign Policy (30%) Identify two examples from U.S. history since 1920 when the United States acted on the world stage in a way that you think was positive. In other words, select two foreign policy initiatives (such as treaties, international agreements or organizations, policies, wars, covert operations, trade agreements, development projects, etc.) that the U.S. government did that you agree with. Write a paragraph for each that describes the foreign policy initiative, what the U.S. did and why you think it was a good idea. Then identify two foreign policy initiatives that the U.S. pursued that you disagree with. Write a paragraph for each that describes the foreign policy initiative, what the U.S. did and why you think it was a bad idea. Based on the foreign policy initiatives you picked, write a paragraph in which you identify what principles and ambitions should and should not motivate U.S. foreign policy. (Each of your foreign policy initiatives must be from different decades.) Your answer will probably be between two and three pages. 2.) Reading Response (30%) Sonia Nazario wrote Enrique’s Journey in order to educate her readers. Identify three key points that she is trying to make by answering the following questions. How do you think she expects us to feel about the main characters? How do you think she expects us to feel about the United States’ immigration policies? What policy changes does she recommend? Once you have identified and clarified her points, describe your reactions to them. Has she convinced you to agree with her? Why or why not? Be sure to use quotes from the book. Your response should be about two to three pages. 3.) Domestic Policy (40%) Interpret one of the two political cartoons below in a three-page essay. Your essay should include answers to the questions listed below (although you do not have to present the answers to the questions in the order the questions are listed). Your essay can also include additional information that you think is relevant. Who is the intended audience of the cartoon? Why might members in the intended audience find the cartoon amusing/ironic/funny? What it the point of the cartoon? When was the cartoon probably produced, and what is the political context of the period? Where do you think it was probably published? What kind of symbolism (as opposed to words) did the cartoonist use to make his point? What kind of background knowledge would someone need to interpret the cartoon. Who would have agreed and disagreed with the cartoon? Why? What’s your own reaction to the cartoon? Please be advised that there are, and I have visited, multiple sites on-line that claim to offer interpretations of political cartoons. Before you decide whether to visit such sites, consider two things. First, I consider attempting to get your ideas from the internet instead of doing the thinking yourself an act of academic dishonesty. You’ve taken the course, and you should do the interpreting on your own. Do not be a cheater. Second, are you really going to trust the analysis 1 of a random person who you do not know by including their interpretation of a cartoon on your final exam? I wouldn’t. I’ve read on-line cartoon analysis and haven’t been impressed. The spelling and grammatical mistakes alone are a useful warning sign, and the analysis is often unconvincing.
