Final Project Guidelines STAT 448 - Advanced Data Analysis Fall 2018 The idea of the final exam, i.e., the final project, is to demonstrate what you’ve learned from the semester in a reflective essay that includes SAS code, statistical results, and interpretations as evidence of your acquired knowledge. The homework reports served as practice for your writing. Now the final project will also exercise your writing skills but now in a more personalized style. In a reflective essay, you can discuss your initial thoughts about what you knew about data analysis, how things you learned changed your understanding of data analysis, and how you’ve grown to some new level of understanding. Learning is a personal journey, so use the essay to discuss your development and use data sets and your own analyses as examples. Each student’s essay will be between 5-10 pages, double-spaced, size 12 font. All other formatting rules will follow the formatting rules of the homework reports used for this class. Each student must include SAS coding and analyses for at least 2 data sets in their essay as they reflect on their experience in this course. The data sets must be sourced from the lecture notes or SAS Programming Exercises, but not from the textbook (any edition). Students must use a minimum of 3 unique statistical methods covering the weeks 2-14 of the Syllabus. In this context, unique means that you can only discuss one week’s material once, not for the entire paper. The entire paper should cover at least 3 week’s material. The essays must have the following structure: • introduction • body (with SAS code and data analysis) • conclusion The reflective essay is not a diary entry, so do use formal writing styles. The reflective essay is not a review or evaluation of the course, so do not write about or analyze the course or the instructor. Instead, focus on your personal development, what you have learned, how you have grown, what skills you gained, etc. For assistance in writing this reflective essay, you may consult: • Oxbridge Essays • The Center for Writing Studies and the Writer’s Workshop http://www.cws.illinois. edu/workshop/ 1 • The instructor In the last 3 weeks of the course you will be responsible for making posts in the Discussion Board that centralize your reflections. You will be given a writing prompt by the instructor and an associated deadline to make a reply post to the initial prompt. These posts will be considered as Participation Assignments, so do take them seriously as they will help you begin to think about your reflective essays. The deadline to submit the final project reflective essay, which will be in a .pdf format, is Tuesday December 18, 2018 by 12:00:00 AM i.e. Monday December 17, 2018 11:59:59 PM. This final project counts for 30% of the final grade. The Late Submissions Policy does apply to this final project. Prior to making the final submission in Compass, please seek help for possible revisions of your essay. Having a peer or the Center for Writing Studies to proofread and review your essays will be extremely valuable. 2
