For this assignment, you will pretend you are a curator proposing a small exhibition in an art museum. Your exhibition can explore a theme that we have discussed in class (Egyptian Art, African Art, Greek Art, Italian Art), or you can come up with an entirely new idea, if you feel inspired.
In your paper, you should pick four pieces that you think would best illustrate the narrative and the theme(s) of the exhibition you are proposing. While it is recommended that you visit a museum collection in person (e.g. the Brooklyn Museum or the Metropolitan Museum of Art), you can also explore museum collections online (e.g. the Louvre, or the British Museum) and pick works that you feel would benefit your exhibition proposal. You are welcome to pick pieces that have been shown in class or discussed in any of your assigned readings. In your proposal, you must clearly explain why you have picked a certain work of art for your exhibition, and demonstrate how it fits into your exhibition narrative.
Your paper must be approximately 1,300-1,500 words (about 5-6 pages, double spaced) and include illustrations of the pieces that you are proposing for your exhibition. Each illustration should have a caption that includes the title of the work, the artist (if known), date, medium, dimensions, and the museum in which the piece is located.
For your term paper, you are required to consult at least three academic sources (this does not include Wikipedia entries, but can include books and articles from academic journals). You must properly cite these sources through the use of footnotes. If you paraphrase from a source you must also provide a citation. Plagiarism and academic dishonesty will not be tolerated for this assignment. If you have any questions as to what constitutes plagiarism, you should contact me and/or review the syllabus that outlines the code of academic honesty. At the end of your paper, you must include a bibliography that follows the Chicago Manual of Style. You can find examples of what the Chicago Manual of Style looks like online (http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html (Links to an external site.)). Please note that there is a formatting difference between citing a source in a footnote versus citing a source in a bibliography.
Grammar and spelling will be taken into account for this assignment, so please be sure to read over and edit what you have written carefully. Avoid using colloquialisms or informal writing styles (such as internet slang and the use of the second person “you” and the first person “I, my, myself”), as this is a formal academic paper and not a journal entry.
In summary, this is what I want:

- Proper “Chicago Manual of Style” footnoting.
- A page with your bibliography, also in the Chicago format.
- That you consult at least three academic sources.
