Description

1.) Tell me about the two-part Karajan assignments. Performance vs. Rehearsal. In the past, the Rehearsal assignment came first. This time, the Performance came first. When comparing the quality of your responses with past sections, there was, without a doubt, much more deeply felt responses from this current section. There was a big difference in tone, mainly in the shock of what a rehearsal was, after seeing the performance. Even the three excepts from the rehearsals were more thoughful. Consider this article from The Economist (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. as well.

Why do you think the responses were more subdued when the class observed the Rehearsal before the Performance? Can you think of other parallel examples that might highlight this phenomenon? 2.) Now that we're at the end of the course, I'd like some feedback on the way the course was constructed. You may have noticed that I didn't follow the more traditional method that lots of introductory courses use. If you have friends who took another section of Music Appreciation, they may have had material that explained the basics of classical music instruments, basic history of western classical music, well-known composers and background information, listening to well-known music of said composers, etc. I chose not to go with this approach, because things like composer information can be easily Googled. Well known pieces of music by Bach or Beethoven are very readily suggested by YouTube's suggestion algorithms. Instead, I wanted to give context to the music and musicians, and more importantly, context that would be relevant to your life and career. I know some of you didn't understand some of the questions, and I think part of that is due to the fact that I wanted to assign homework that didn't have a clear right or wrong answer. You're free to reflect on any part of the course as you see fit. I do hope it was meaningful and that you learned something.

Question 1
Rehearsals involve the participants in a play or music and ensuring that everything they are
required to do is perfect. During such times, the participants are required to ensure that their
movements are uniform and they understand the tune they are playing. Moreover, the directors
have to ensure that every instrument or equipment that is to be used during a performance is well
placed on the stage. The rehearsals enable the directors to determine how the audience is likely
to react to everything that is happening on the stage. Rehearsals main aim at correcting any
mistakes and hence they do not engage the audience fully.
