In an industry, workers may be exposed to occupational health risks if industrial hygiene
is not maintained. For example, they may be exposed to physical hazards such as excessive sound,
chemical pollutants such as toxic gases, biological hazards such as bacteria as well as ergonomic
hazards (WHO, 2002). These hazards are capable of causing occupational ill health to workers
and/or aggravating the non-occupational ill-health conditions (WHO, 2002), and thus necessitate
the creation and maintenance of industrial hygiene. Industrial hygiene refers to the science and art
of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling the hazards in the work environment in a
way that prevents injury, sickness or discomfort to workers (WHO, 2002).
