Week 8 Lab – Visible Light Instructions Please carefully read and complete this lab prior to attempting Week 8 Quiz. Calculations and questions answered in this lab will be needed to answer questions #19-30 on Week 8 Quiz. You will also be required to complete and upload this document for Question #31. Introduction This week’s lab relates closely with material covered in this week’s lesson. Visible light, emitted by the sun, is composed of wavelength, and each individual wavelength is a different color. The color wavelength detected by our eyes is based the wavelengths reflected towards our eyes. Objects can appear as a variety of different colors because of the absorption of some wavelengths and reflection of others. Objectives The goals of this lab include: • Understanding why our eyes detect different colors • Identifying why the sky appears different colors over the course of the day 1 Assignment Within Assignment instruction is an interactive exercise titled Why is the Sky Blue. Attached under Supporting Materials is a PowerPoint Presentation titled Week 8 - Visible Light Lab Instructions to Create Custom Color. Please complete the exercise and open this presentation to assist you in completing the lab. Answer the following questions, in the space provided. These responses will be needed to answer questions #19-30 on Week 8 Quiz. Then upload this document for Question #31. Please make sure to include units in your responses. 1. Which statement about colors is true? a. Our eyes detect wavelengths that are reflected towards us. b. Our eyes detect wavelengths that are reflected away from us. c. Our eyes detect wavelengths that are absorbed towards us. d. Our eyes detect wavelengths that are absorbed away from us. 2. Which statement about atmospheric particle size is true? a. Atmospheric particles are smaller than visible wavelength b. Atmospheric particles are larger than visible wavelength c. Atmospheric particles are nearly the same size as visible wavelength d. Atmospheric particles are unrelated in size to visible wavelength 3. What is the spectral range of visible light? a. Between 400 and 700 nm b. Between 300 and 500 nm c. Between 600 and 900 nm d. Between 100 and 400 nm 4. What color does the sun emit? a. White b. Yellow c. Blue d. Red 5. What color has the shortest wavelength? 6. What color has the longest wavelength? 7. What color is scattered most by the atmosphere when the sun is directly overhead? 8. What percent of light scattered is by the atmosphere is of the blue wavelength when the sun is directly overhead? 9. What percent of light scattered is by the atmosphere is of the red wavelength when the sun is directly overhead? 10. Why is the sky not blue when the sun’s angle is lower in the sky? 2 11. What color do we often see when the sun’s angle is lower in the sky? 12. Our eyes detect what color when: a. red, green, and blue is absorbed? b. red, green, and blue is reflected? 13. Our eyes detect what color when: a. only red is absorbed? b. only blue is absorbed? c. only green is absorbed? 14. Our eyes detect what color when: a. only red and blue is absorbed? b. only red and green is absorbed? c. only blue and green is absorbed? 3
