Carl Rogers was very influential in revolutionizing counseling theory and practice. His
influence still shapes counseling practice in the contemporary world. This psychologist advanced the
person-centered approach to therapy which is based on humanistic psychology concepts. Rogers
emphasized the standard of the client-therapist bond and the personal attributes and attitudes of the
therapist as the significant factors which determine the success or failure of a therapeutic process.
This essay expounds on three therapist attributes proposed by Rogers to promote a climate of growth
for clients during a counseling process.
The three attributes of Rogers which help individuals to move forward during the therapeutic
process are congruence, unreserved positive regard and clear empathic understanding (Corey, 2015).
The first attitude of congruence requires integrated, authentic and genuine therapists during the
counseling session. Therapists' inner experience and outer expression of thoughts, attitudes, feelings,
and reactions during interaction with a client should be real. As such, a therapist should openly
express concern, anger, attraction, boredom, frustration, liking and annoyance in the relationship.
