This assignment is a 2000 word written paper.
This assignment provides students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of leadership by evaluating the skills, values, methods, and performance of someone in leadership. Through the reading of an autobiography or biography of a leader, the student will determine the leader’s strengths and weakness but, most importantly, how that individual’s approach to leadership conforms or diverges from the model presented by Kouzes and Posner in The Leadership Challenge. Finally, students will have an opportunity to reflect on the leader’s experience and describe what they learned and how it will help them in their own leadership journey.
The Schmidt text (suggested readings) provides a fairly comprehensive overview of the influence that Christians have had in the world including in the areas of science, art, architecture, music, economics, business, healthcare, education, law, politics, literature, and, of course, theology and religion. For this assignment, identify a leader in your specific field (discipline, major, minor, area of interest, etc.); this can be a current leader or an historical figure. Select and read a quality academic biography or autobiography about this leader and write a book report. Your professor must approve your topic; an assignment submission link is provided in Unit 2 through which you can submit your book selection. The main body of the report must address the following:
- What individuals influenced this leader and in what ways? In other words, who are his or her role models?
- Identify at least two (2) major challenges the leader faced. Did the leader succeed or fail?
- Integrate the Kouzes and Posner text and explain how well the leader reflects the leadership framework. Be sure to show how the leader does or does not demonstrate each of the five leadership practices and related commitments. Provide examples. Were the successes or failures identified above due to leader’s conformity or divergence from those leadership practices? Explain.
- What events influenced his or her leadership journey?
- What influence (positive and/or negative) has this leader had on his or her profession or academic field and the culture?
- Does this leader demonstrate good character? Is humility essential to his or her approach to leadership?
Finally, in a Reflection section of your report, explain what you learned from this person’s experience that can help you be a better leader. How has your view/definition of Christian leadership changed from the start of this course (re: introductory blog post)? How has this leader’s story contributed to that view? What insights do you have that you didn’t before—about yourself, your character (re: the Christian Character Index), your faith, the culture, and the world?
This book report should be approximately 2000 words in length, and include the following sections: (1) introduction, (2) brief overview of the leader/book, (3) main body (addressing questions), (4) reflection section, (5) conclusion, and (6) references (not included in word count).

Billy Graham; Just As I Am
Introduction
Billy Graham was the most influential evangelist of the 20th century. He was born in
1918 in North Carolina and died in February 2018 of natural causes. Billy Graham grew up in
a Christian home and made a commitment to Christ in 1934. In 1939, he was ordained as a
minister of the gospel of Christ. Throughout his life, he dedicated his time to preaching the
gospel, giving hope to the society, and mentoring other leaders, including12 presidents. His
ministry grew exponentially in the mid-20th century, and in 1950 the Billy Graham
Evangelistic Association (BGEA) was established with a vision of spreading the gospel of
Christ globally. Under his leadership, the organization propelled Christ’s love into action, and
called upon people to come to the Christian faith just as they were. In a 2007 autobiography,
which he originally published in 1997, Billy Graham recounts his life experiences in
ministry, including his leadership, influence, and personal relationships.
Overview of the Book
‘Just as I Am’ is Billy Graham’s memoir which walks the reader through; his life as a
Christian minister, his interactions with the presidents who sought his counsel, and his family
life. The title of the memoir was inspired by a famous Hymn he loved, titled ‘Just as I am’. In
the memoir, he discusses his life growing up in rural North Carolina, how he became a
Christian as a young age, how he began preaching after attending Bible school, the writing
and memorizing of his sermons, and radio and TV evangelism (Graham, 2007). He recounts
his love for people which inspired his reaching out to others while growing up in the farm,
and his leadership roles in the schools he attended. He also provides details of his national
recognition which took place after a great Los Angeles crusade. This crusade paved a way for
his global growth, as well as his frequent encounters with powerful political figures. He also

discloses details of his other personal relationships with family as well as his struggles in
balancing his evangelism calling with family life. He narrates his own struggles with the
Christian faith and doubts of the word, given that it was written by people. He recounts his
journey to reconciling this fact, and learning to accept the world of God as it is. He also
recounts the opportunities he had to preach the gospel across the United States and in other
nations.
Billy Graham’s Role Models
As a teenager, Billy Graham was inspired by Dr. Mordecai Ham. In 1934, Billy
Graham converted into believing in the Christian faith during a preaching revival by the
