Labor unions/ trade unions mainly protect the interests of the worker. Before the foundation
of labor unions, workers suffered a lot. Employers could wake up one morning and decide to fire
an employee without a good reason and without giving them notice so they can prepare
psychologically and start looking for another job. Also, they could decide to cut the wages of the
workers or even delay pay intentionally. Workers never had the assurance that their job was safe.
When trade unions started coming up, workers were happy because finally, there was someone
they could turn to if their employer did something wrong. For example, reduce their wages.
Employers, on the other hand, were displeased because they could no longer exploit their workers.
Trade unions empowered workers to the point where they dared to stand up for their rights fight
for what rightfully belonged to them (Lucio, 2015). They helped workers get the certainty that they
always wanted, i.e., get their employers to give them contracts. Contracts specify the amount of
time the person is to work in an organization thus preventing the employers from firing workers
as he/she pleases. The same level in which the workers loved the unions was the same level in
which employers disliked them.
