Do you agree with the sentence imposed on Sandusky? Why or why not?
In my opinion, the judge reduced his sentence based on logic. Logically, Sandusky would not spend 442
years in prison, therefore reducing the sentence and making him eligible for parole at 98 seems logical.
However, the sentencing of James Holmes returned to my memory (Bohm & Kelly, 2014). He was
sentenced to 3,318 years in prison and logically he will die in prison. What is evident is that the type of
crime seems to garner a different punishment. Holmes took 24 lives and attempted to kill another 140
innocent victims. Sandusky was a public hero who used his position and money to prey on
disadvantaged youth (Bohm & Kelly, 2014). Although Sandusky did not murder any of his victims, he
took their innocence and violated the public's trust. He used his charity as a front to identify his next
victim, and hide his misdoings under the guise of charity (Klein and Tolson, 2015). Much like Holmes,
Sandusky sentence should have remained intact, as it would have sent a stronger message to the public
and the victims that child abuse is not tolerated.

2.What factors do you believe influenced the judge's sentence?
In Unit three, we discussed the Danziger Bridge incident where police officers and members of the New
Orleans police department falsely accused an innocent man and murdered four individuals. Although
the cover-up was eventually revealed, the officers and administrator sentences were significantly
reduced (Bohm & Haley, 2014). Their sentences were reduced because the judge empathized with the
officer's line of work and the possibility of being threatened, yet, these men killed four innocent
individuals. The Danziger Bridge crime story is similar to the Sandusky case, as the judge reduced his
sentence based on his public works. It should be noted, Sandusky used his public position, and his
charity, as a front to molest children. However, the judge empathizes with Sandusky and gives his credit
for his past works (Klein, Tolson, & Longo, 2013). To some degree, Sandusky represents another
miscarriage of justice, instead of holding him fully responsible for his actions, Sandusky, like the Danziger
Bridge cops, are not executed to the extent of the law.

3.What about Sandusky's claim of innocence?
Sandusky's claims of innocence, in my opinion, are exactly what he proclaims. It is a declaration many
should expect from him considering it is the court and the system's duty to prove his guilt. To some
degree, Sandusky's claims of innocence lost validity once it was discovered that the allegations were
known among the University of Pennsylvania staff (Lucas & Fyke, 2014). For example, in March 1998,

Paterno was aware of the sexual abuse and child molestation allegations (Bohm & Haley, 2014). He did
not take any action to protect the potential victims, and he informed the administration about his
behavior to protect the institution and the profitable athletic program. To some degree, Sandusky's
claim of innocence may have been valid if the allegations emerged in 2011, without any previous
warnings or records of misbehavior. However, the allegations were brought to light 13 years before he
was formally charged, gives more credence to the alleged victims claims.
