How do you handle Voluntary and Involuntary Commitment?
•
Based on the scenario, would you recommend that the client be voluntarily committed?
Why or why not?
According to the case, the client needs voluntary commitment. This is because Maryland
laws require that all psychiatric patients who pose danger to their own life and safety to be
hospitalized. Voluntary commitment is also necessary considering that there are no other ways or
strategies of handling the situation to help the patient to be safe and secure (NAMI Maryland,
n.d.). Voluntary hospitalization is also mandatory considering that the client is suffering from
major depressive disorder, which is a common mental health condition. The client is suffering
from major depressive disorder because he feels worthless and unimportant, which has pushed
him to commit suicide with an intention of ending their life (NAMI Maryland, n.d.).
•
Based on the laws in your state, would the client be eligible for involuntary
commitment? Explain why or why not.
Based on the laws of Maryland State regarding commitment, the client requires
involuntary commitment. This is because the client has shown potential harm to their body and
welfare, and could consequently turn to harming others in case they exhibit more distress and
want to let off their anger on others (NAMI Maryland, n.d.). The client also requires involuntary
commitment because there is no other solution to their condition, and requires counselling and
close supervision by a trained psychiatric officer. The patient also suffers from major depressive
disorder and thus necessitates that they be under psychiatric interventions until they are stable to
work on their own (NAMI Maryland, n.d.). The patient also needs inpatient care to help in
examining him and observing his condition considering that he is suffering from poisoning.
