The Alabama court system consists of state and federal courts. The state has three federal
court districts that include the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, the
District Court of Middle District of Alabama and the District Court for the Southern District of
Alabama. The federal courts in the state represent the federal government in both criminal and
civil litigations and each court has its respective attorney appointed by the federal court system.
Rulings made in the federal courts can be appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Eleventh
Circuit in the federal court system.
Alabama’s state court system comprises of three levels leading to its Supreme Court.
These levels include the appellate courts, the trial courts, and courts that have limited
jurisdictions. The appellate courts in Alabama include the Supreme Court, the court of civil
appeals and the court of criminal appeals. The Supreme Court is the state’s highest court and but
has no original jurisdiction on cases since its main authority is to review decisions rendered by
